Tomb Raider 1: Atlantean Scion Walkthrough & Game Guide

Level 13: Natla's Mines

You begin the level underwater and your inventory contains only the ammo and the Medi Packs you have found until now. The bad guys of the last FMV disarmed you, so apart from making your way out, you also need to find some guns.

Swim forwards and through the tunnel until you can surface. As you swim, you will be able to see a ledge with crates on the left. The ledge is high and you cannot climb on it. Beyond, you can see a waterfall on the right hand wall and a ledge with barrels and crates at the end (mind the boat here).

Behind the waterfall - First swim down and behind the waterfall. Climb into the passage and follow it around. Throw the switch to open a gate elsewhere and reveal a switch behind. The passage above leads to another gate that you will open in just a bit. Return back and jump into the water.

On the ledge with barrels and crates - Climb on the ledge with the barrels and crates and go to the right to reach a cave with a mine car blocking a tunnel. For now, go behind the rocks opposite the entrance and pull the movable crate to reveal an opening. Climb on the crate and drop down on the other side. Go through the tunnel to find the gate you opened before. Use the switch to open the gate in the passage above the first switch.

Behind the waterfall again - Return back and drop into the water. Swim behind the waterfall and climb out of the water. Pass the first switch and climb into the passage. Follow it around to the left to reach the gate you just opened. This gets you to a ledge above the water and close to the waterfall. Walk to the front left corner and take a running jump to the ledge with the two barricades. Enter the tunnel and follow it to the end.

Area with building suspended from crane - As you enter the next area, Lara will look up to the suspended room. This means that there is something in there you must not miss. Pick up the Large Medi Pack from the middle of the room and go to the glassed building using the steps on the right hand side. Inside the building you will find three receptacles. What you are missing are three Fuses. Pick up the Magnum Clips (the PS players will also find a Save Crystal here) and return back outside.

Go through the opening on the west to reach a cave with two small buildings, a gate straight ahead and an opening on the left. There is also a movable crate that you should start with. Push\ pull it beneath the opening in the ceiling. Climb on the crate and take a running jump to the building. (This screenshot shows where you need to stand on the crate. You will see in just a bit why you need to push it there and not close to the building.) Fall through the decrepit crumbling floor and go up the ramps until you reach a switch. Use it to move the boat towards another ledge. Continue to the other side of the passage and slide down to the ledge. Then hang from the edge and drop onto the movable crate without losing health.

Area with two boulders and three barricades - Approach the gate on the west and it will open automatically. Enter the passage. The deal is to reach an opening at the far right before one of the boulders blocks it. There are three ways to do it, and here they are:

Jumping over the barricades before the boulder blocks the opening: Approach the first barricade and a boulder will roll from the left hand opening. This will not touch Lara so do not be nervous. Now back up to the edge of the ledge and take a running jump. Run and immediately press Jump, like you always do for a running jump. This will take you to the beginning of the next ledge. On landing there, the boulder from the ramp on the right hand side starts rolling. Without stopping at all, and having the Up and Jump buttons still compressed, Lara will easily jump over the second barricade. Now turn her right, performing the last jump that will get you close to the opening.

Without triggering the second boulder: Once the first boulder rolls, do not jump over the barricade. Instead, turn right and jump up to grab the ramp. Do not pull up or the boulder will roll. Shimmy to the left and once you pass the barricade, pull up. Do not shimmy to the very end of the ramp. Stop before the part that goes downwards (see this screenshot to get oriented). That way the boulder will never roll and you can reach the opening at your ease.

Bypassing the boulder even if it has blocked the passage: Take your time to reach the opening. It does not matter if the boulder blocks it. You are going to bypass it. To do that, stand diagonally facing the opening, to the part where there is a small gap between the boulder and the opening (as shown in this screenshot). Press Up and Lara will start running into the boulder, without going anywhere of course. Whilst having the Up button compressed, press Jump. Do not let go of these two buttons. Soon Lara will pass through the gap and land inside the opening.

If the boulder blocks the opening and for some reason the third way does not work for you, you can reset the area. To do that, climb on the ramp from where the second boulder rolled and go to the top. Follow the passage and drop through the opening to reach the area with the two small buildings. Approach the gate again and it will open. Now try again.

Once you make it, pick up the Fuse #1. Go up the ramp, but stop when you reach the corner. There are two boulders at the top of the second ramp and here is how you can deal with them. Step on the raised part of the ramp and the first (left as you face them) boulder will roll. Hop back to avoid it. Now go up the ramp from the left hand side and the second boulder will roll beside you. Safely drop through the opening in the floor to reach the previous area with the two boulders and barricades. You can proceed depending on what you did before. If the boulder on the ramp did not roll, go to the right on the T-junction in order to trigger it. Then climb on the ramp and follow the opening to return back to the area with the two small buildings.

Heading back to the pool\ room with movable crates - You need to go back to the pool, so exit through the opening on the east and pass the area with the glassed building. When you reach the ledge with the two barricades, hang from the edge and drop onto the rocks to slide into the water. Climb on the boat and take a running jump to the ledge with the crates (the waterfall should be to your back). Go behind the crates on the left to reach a room with "Natla's Technologies" crates. Pick up the Magnum Clips from the alcove and pull the nearby movable crate. There is only one and it is darker than the rest. Then push it into the alcove. Behind you will find a second movable crate. Pull it twice, then go to the right side of it and pull it once more to reveal a passage. This leads to a switch that moves the mine car. Use it and then return back to the pool.

Opening behind mine car - Climb on the ledge with the crates and barrels and enter the cave on the right. The mine car does not block your way, so go through the tunnel and push the movable block to reveal a room behind. Climb on the block, then into the tunnel above. Pick up the Uzi Clips and use the switch to open a gate next to a conveyor belt. Drop back onto the crate and go through the tunnel on the west (opposite the entrance). Be careful in the next area. Proceed until you reach Fuse #2. Pick it up and do not go any further because one of Natla's cowboys will start shooting from the right. Return back to the crate, then into the cave with the mine car. Go back to the pool and drop into the water.

Area with conveyor belt - Swim beneath the waterfall and climb into the passage. Follow it around to the left and make your way back to the room with the two buildings. Go through the left hand opening (north) and follow the tunnel, which gets you to the conveyor belt. The gate is on the left. Go through it to reach a small room. Pick up the Uzi Clips and use the switch to initiate the conveyor belt, which throws Fuse #3 in front of it. Pick it up.

Once you have the three Fuses - Return back to the area with the two small buildings. Then go through the opening on the right to reach the room with the glassed building. Go up there and place the Fuses in their receptacles. Every time you use a Fuse, the crane lowers the hanging cabin outside. On using the third Fuse, the crane drops the room onto the ground. Go down, enter the room and pick up a pair of Pistols. Do not forget to select them from your inventory if you want to use them. Lara does not holster them automatically.

1st Secret - Exit and climb onto the roof of the newly fallen room. (Jump up and grab it. "Action and Up" does not seem to work.) Take a running jump to grab the opening on the east and pull up. Search for an opening on the right hand wall and climb through it. The gate opens automatically and closes when you pass through. You need to reach the opening on the left, and here are three possible ways:

• Stand somewhere in the middle of the edge and turn to diagonally face the opening. Tap back once and take a running jump into it.

• Slide down the ramp backwards, pressing Action to grab the edge. Pull up and the trapdoor will close (or wait for it to close and pull up through it!!). Then climb into the opening.

• Slide down the ramp forwards and just before reaching the end, jump to the opposite slide. Do not let go of Jump and Lara will start jumping back and forth. The trapdoor will soon close. Then climb into the opening.

Drop into the room below and pick up the Large Medipack and Uzi Clips. Use the switch to open the gate outside. Drop onto the trapdoor and take a standing jump over the slide. Go back to the tunnel and follow it to reach an opening above the pool. (The PS players will find a Save Crystal here.) Drop into the water.

Back to the area with the cowboy - Now that you have got the Pistols, let's take care of the cowboy you saw before (if you did). Climb on the ledge with crates and barrels, pass the room with the mine car by going through the opening on the right and enter the area with the cowboy. He is tough and does not get killed easily. So back up into the tunnel you came from for cover. Once he is dead, pick up a pair of Magnums from his dead body.

Going down to the lava river - Be careful of the pits as you hang around. Go to the far right and approach the edge. Take a look below to spot a square ledge. Hang from the edge and drop down. (The PS players will find a Save Crystal here.) Then drop back and hang from the edge of the square ledge. Release Action and press it again to grab the block below. Pull up and pick up the Small Medi Pack. Grab the crevice and shimmy to the right. When you reach the end, drop onto the ledge. Go around the corner to reach a second crevice. Grab it and shimmy to the right. At the end, release. Turn right and you will see a third crevice. Take a running jump to grab the rocky ledge above. Release Action and press it again to grab the crevice. Shimmy to the right and drop down at the end. Follow the passage, which leads to a slope. Slide down to reach a ledge next to the lava river.

Avoid the square ledge opposite the opening, because the sparkles can hurt you. Move a bit to the left and jump to the ledge in the middle. Go to the left and take a running jump to the first pillar. Then take another running jump to the second pillar.

2nd Secret - Turn right and take a running jump to the opening. When you reach the corner, a boulder starts rolling from the left, but you have enough time to push the movable block and be saved. Then pull it facing west and go behind it. Still facing west, climb onto the tunnel above and turn around. Jump to the ledge on the right and pick up the Large Medi Pack and Uzi Clips. Jump back to the tunnel and follow it to the end. Drop onto the tracks and pick up the Large Medipack, the Shotgun and the Uzi Clips. See if you can pass through the gap between the wall and the boulder. To do that, run towards this gap (as shown in this screenshot) and if Lara does not pass, press Jump and keep the Jump and Up arrows pressed. If you make it, climb on the upper room above. If you cannot do it, make your way back the same way you came. Then drop through the opening in the northwest corner and take a running jump from the opening to the pillar you came from. Turn right (west).

Take a running jump to the next pillar (on the right) and another running jump to the next one. Take the last running jump to the next pillar (on the left) and drop onto the ledge below. Go through the opening and slide to a ledge above a lava pit. Jump to grab the ledge ahead and pull up. You will reach a room with "TNT" crates. Ignore the first group of crates and go to the other. From the two crates, the left one is movable. Pull it once, go to the right and pull it once more to position it in front of the doorway. Now start pulling it into the next room. You have to position the crate beneath the opening on the left hand wall (if the entrance is to your back).

Climb on the crate, then into this opening. Go up the ramp (getting a Save Crystal on your way) and climb on the rocky ledge. Take a running jump to either slope above the lava pit and wait until a boulder passes. Then take a running jump to the opposite side. Make sure you jump off close to the corner, because you have to reach the flat part. Follow the tunnel which will get you to a ledge opposite where you killed the cowboy. Go to the right and pick up the Magnum Clips. Then flip the switch. This will explode the TNT crate you pushed before and destroy the rocks in the room. You need to go back there, so return back to the lava pit and jump over it as you did before. Go down the tunnel and return to the blasted room.

Dealing with the skateboarder - Use standing jumps to clear the angled parts of the rocks and follow the tunnel, which will get you to a skate park. Soon the skateboarder will arrive. If you have enough Magnum Clips, use the Magnums to get rid of him quickly. If you decide to use the Pistols, use the tunnel you came from as a cover. When he is dead, pick a pair of Uzis from his dead body.

Go to the west side of the area and you will find some Uzi Clips close to the ramp. Return to the entrance of the skate park and turn left (if the entrance is to your back). Take a running jump over the gap and pick up the Uzi Clips. Go around the walkways to reach a pit with water. Before dropping into the pit, pick up the Uzi Clips from nearby.

3rd Secret - Drop into the water and swim through the tunnel. The gate opens automatically so that you can enter and get the Uzi Clips and Small and Large Medi Packs. Swim back through the gate and surface above. Climb out of the water and follow the passage that gets you back close to the water pit. Drop down.

Ramp with three boulders - Exit from the opening on the north side and follow the passage around to the left. (The PS players will get a Save Crystal on their way.) The next area hides a boulder trap. Three boulders will start rolling and here is a way to deal with them. Step at the bottom of the ramp, hugging the left hand wall. The middle boulder will roll, so wait. Then proceed more and when the left boulder drops down and starts rolling, side-flip to the right. The right boulder will start rolling, so side-flip to the left. Go up the ramp, but stop before reaching the end. A fourth boulder will roll from the passage on the left.

Go up the ramp and climb into the room above. Climb on the ledge in the northwest corner and jump to the first pillar. Turn to face east and jump to grab the ledge. Pull up, turn left and jump to grab the floating pillar. Pull up, turn left again and jump to grab the last pillar. Then climb into the room above.

Area with movable blocks - Here you will find a movable block (#1). Push it twice to reveal a room behind. This way you will position the block in the far left corner of the second room (and cover an opening on the left hand wall and another movable block behind - north). For now, go to the back right corner of the room, where you will find an opening in the ceiling. Climb into the room above. Here you will see a second movable block. Pull it once, go to the left side of it and (facing west) push it in the corner (and next to the opening). You just revealed a room behind with a closed door and an opening in the floor. You cannot do anything with the door, so drop through the opening.

In this room you will see a third movable block. You cannot push it, so pull it once. The block you just pulled is the one that was covered by the very first block you pushed. To return back there, climb through the opening in the ceiling to return back to the room with the closed door, exit to the left room and drop through the opening. Here is the first movable block. Facing north, push it once and you will reveal an opening on the left, which includes a switch and second closed door. (The PS players will find a Save Crystal here.) Use the switch to open the first door above. Exit, climb through the opening in the ceiling to the room above and enter the next room. The door is on the left.

Follow the passage and head down the steps on the left to find a fourth movable block. Push it once to reveal a hallway with two alcoves on the left hand wall. There is also a closed door that opens when you step on a specific square and closes after a few seconds. Ignore the door and use the switch from the second alcove. This will open the door close to the first switch. To return back there, follow the hallway back, go up the steps and exit through the door. Go through the opening on the right to the previous room and drop through the opening in the floor. The door you just opened is in the opening in the northeast corner. Go through it.

Outside - "Say cheese..!!" A tough guy is waiting for you outside. You can climb on either of the roofs for cover and kill him from above. It will take you some time because Lara cannot aim at him easily from up there. You can also kill him from the ground. For the least damage, try to stand behind him and shoot his back. The guy will try to turn and face you, but if you keep moving behind him (shooting his back at the same time) it will be like Lara chasing him. The more he tries to turn and face you, the easier for you to run behind him and shoot him. When he is dead, he drops his Shotgun. If you already have the weapon, you get nothing (not even Shells, but if you want the maximum amount of pick-ups at your final statistics, make sure you pick it up).

If you take a look on the two small buildings, you will see that one of them has its door open. This leads you back. It is the door that opened by stepping on a specific square, remember? You need to open the door of the other building, something you will do now. Go to the pyramid and climb on the ledge above the entrance. Take a standing jump to the first flat part of the pyramid. You cannot reach the flat part on the same level, so take standing jumps until you reach the flat part at the top. Then turn left and jump on the pyramid to slide on the flat part at the bottom. Enter the cave and use the switch to open the door of the second building. Drop back down and go there. Inside you will find a Large Medi Pack, some Uzi Clips and the Pyramid Key. Place the key in the keyhole next to the entrance of the pyramid to open the doors. Go through them to end the level.

The cut scene shows Natla placing the Scion on an altar. She then looks at a big yellow sphere.

Then comes a brief FMV, where the top of a mountain explodes, revealing the top of a gold pyramid.
