Level 23: Citadel Gate

First Time
You first enter the level from the Chambers Of Tulun after getting past the Minotaur.

[Note about the locusts - You will encounter swarms of locusts in this level. Unfortunately, you cannot kill them, but you can take the advantage of a bug here. When the locusts attack you, save your game in a different slot (just in case) and load it back up again. The locusts should be gone when you return. Special thanks to TR-Player for this bug.]

As soon as the level begins, you lose the control of the Look button. Just continue forwards to drop to the ground. Step onto the ledge where Sergeant Azizus is lying.

The cut scene shows Lara kneeling in front of the wounded Sergeant. He asks her to help him and the rest of his men liberate the city. Lara tells him she needs directions to enter the Citadel. Azizus however tells her that a creature tore through his men like a firestorm, despite the home team managing to position a truck filled with explosive devices directly in front of it (this apparently managed to force the creature back a bit). Beast or not beast; Lara wants to get into that building. Azizus wants to help her and tells her that two of his men are still in the area. One of them holds the frequency for the mine detonator, and the other the second half of the code for the explosive device. Once Lara finds those men, she should tell them that Azizus sent her. She then needs to come back and take Azizus to the ammunition truck in order to eradicate the blockage.

Pick up the Revolver ammo in front of the ledge and follow the street to the end.

The cut scene shows the (oh my!) creature that Azizus was talking about and the ammunition truck directly opposite.

After the cut scene, head to the left behind the slope with the columns. It is safe here. Pick up the Small Medipack and the Grenadegun Normal ammo. Turn to face west. At the far end you can see a crawlspace, but you cannot reach it. The entrance is from the other side beyond the Dragon and it is an area that includes a couple of pickups.

(Note - If you return to Azizus now he will tell you that your bike will need modifications to clear some of the larger obstacles. Nitrous Oxide connected to the carburettor should give you the extra punch. He then tells you to bring him the codes. Avoid going back to Azizus now, because every time you pass the point where you saw the cut scene that showed the Dragon, a swarm of locusts will attack.)

Getting past the Dragon - The first thing you should know is that you cannot kill the Dragon. So, do not waste your ammo and time. Also, there is nothing behind the ammunition truck, so avoid going there. For now, you need to pass in front of the Dragon and head to the other side. To avoid getting toasted, wait for the Dragon to throw a fireball and then start sprinting. When you are almost at the end, and whilst still sprinting, press the Jump button to perform a low somersault and avoid a possible up and coming fireball.

Area beyond the Dragon - Once you are at the other side, a swarm of locusts will attack. This happens every time you are close to the Dragon. You cannot kill the locusts, so keep running until they gradually fade away (or use the locust bug as described at the top of the page). You may reach the end of the street where you can see a deep pit with a taxi on the left. Do not bother with it, as you cannot do anything now. Return close to the Dragon where you passed an alley in the west, just to the left of the clothesline.

Cross the alley and head to the crawlspace at the end. A crocodile emerges from inside, so jump onto the slope on your left and kill it from there (it cannot reach you up there of course). A second crocodile emerges from inside the crawlspace when you step in front of it. Again, kill it from the top of the slope. Crawl through the opening and get the Revolver ammo and the Crossbow Poison ammo. Crawl back outside.

Coffin puzzle - Climb onto the ledge on the west wall - the left wall as you exit the crawlspace. You can see two coffins with symbols and three switches on the ground and a fourth switch on the ledge to the left. Each switch has a number above it (I, II, III, IIII). Notice the symbols at the top of the north wall? This is the solution to the puzzle. Use the Crossbow combined with the LaserSight and shoot the decrepit balcony using Explosive arrows to reveal the second part of the solution.

To move each coffin, you need to throw the switches that correspond to the symbols above the coffins. According to the solution, you need to use the I and III switches in order to move the first coffin (the one close to the opening from whence you came) and the I, II and IIII in order to move the second coffin. Drop to the ground. Since the switches do not reset, simply throw all of them. To reach the fourth switch, step on the raised ledge and jump up to grab the ledge above.

The cut scene shows the area from above, focusing on the symbols above the coffins.

Drop into the first hole (the one close to the opening from whence you came). Use the Crowbar as a handle to pull the lever and open a door in the second hole. Climb back up, drop into the second hole, and throw the switch to open the door above (next to the first hole). A swarm of locusts will attack, so keep going until they fade away. Go through the door you just opened and kill the two bats beyond it. Run up the ramp. The Dragon's scream will alert you that another swarm of locusts are on their way here (ok, use the locust bug here to get rid of them). Keep going upwards and DON'T backtrack or you will trigger more locusts.

At the end of the passageway, a cut scene shows a panoramic view of the area.

If you triggered the cut scene whilst the locusts were biting you, press the Look button to break the cut scene. Kill the two bats that are flying outside.

Secret (1-1\ total: 58-70) - Save your game because getting the Secret is quite tricky. Take a running jump to grab the rope. Climb to the top to stop swinging, and then slide down to the bottom. Turn around and face the bell on the right (in the northeast corner). You need to land on the ledge where the bell is. Swing towards the bell and jump onto the ledge, pressing Action as you do so to avoid hitting the wall above. If you blew up the decrepit balcony before, swing towards this balcony now. Do not worry. Lara will not hit her head on it. If you did not blow up that balcony before, swing towards the left part of the ledge. (If you are having troubles using the rope, refer to the Rope Tips below). Once you make it, carefully turn to face north and drop backwards to hang from the ledge. Release Action and press it again to grab the edge of the crawlspace below. Pull up and drop to the other side. Pick up the Large Medipack and the Crossbow Explosive ammo. Crawl back out and drop to the ground.

Ledges above the streets - Make your way back up to the ledge. As you go up the ramp, a swarm of locusts will attack. Again, take a running jump to grab the rope. Slide to the bottom and swing forwards to land on the ledge at the opposite side. Take a running jump to the red and white striped ledge on the left. Walk to the edge and take a standing jump to the smaller ledge. Turn around and kill the giant wasp that emerges from behind you. Take a running jump to the next red and white striped ledge on the left, then a standing jump to grab the ladder on the right. Climb to the left around the corner and drop to the ledge below.

Turn around, walk to the edge, and take a standing jump to the small ledge. Kill the giant wasp that emerges from behind you. Turn to face southwest and take a running jump to the ledge beneath the crevice. Grab the opening and pull up to get the Small Medipack. Crawl back out and drop onto the ledge. (If you are low on health you can avoid the last giant wasp. After dropping onto the ledge below the ladder, turn left and take a running jump over the wooden bars to grab the ledge below the crevice.) Take a running jump to the red and white striped ledge in the southeast. Walk to the edge and take a running jump to grab the opening ahead. Then pull up.

Opening above the deep pit with taxi - Follow the passageway to reach the opening that overlooks a deep pit. Kill the bat that comes from the right. You may want to save your game here, because the jump is quite tricky. You need to jump to the well-lit ledge on the right below. Walk to the front right corner of the opening. Turn right 45 degrees, tap back once, and take a running jump without pressing Action or you will decrease Lara's momentum (you may need to turn right in midair). Immediately draw your weapons and kill the giant wasp, but be careful not to step backwards and fall into the pit. Avoid the right hand part (or you may catch fire) and pass the truck on the left. Kill a second giant wasp and pick up the Nitrous Oxide Canister.

Walk to the edge above the pit and take a running jump over the pit towards the taxi. Follow the street back to the Dragon, as you need to pass in front it and make your way back to Sergeant Azizus. Just prior to the Dragon, a swarm of locusts will attack. Keep running until they fade away or use the locust bug.

There is a crawlspace on the left just before passing the Dragon on your way back, which leads to a tunnel, the way out being the other side beyond the Dragon. This is handy if you struggle to get past the Dragon, but the locusts that emerge in there take away a lot of your health (unless you use the locust bug). If you decide to see everything, crawl though it getting bitten by the locusts. Drop down on the other side and pick up the Flares. Slide down the ramp and pick up the Crossbow Explosive ammo and the Large Medipack. When you reach the end of the tunnel, turn around and kill the bat that emerges from behind you. Crawl through the next opening and drop down on the other side. Immediately roll and follow the street to the left to avoid the locusts. Then shortly return back to Azizus.

Climb onto the ledge where Azizus is lying and drop to the other side. Climb into the tunnel to the left to return to the Chambers Of Tulun (Second Time).


Rope Tips - Always make sure that you swing whilst being at the bottom of the rope. This will allow you to gain more momentum. If you grab the rope and you need to turn in order to swing towards your target, climb to the top of the rope to stop moving and then slide down to the bottom. Press the Sprint button to swing and wait for Lara to grasp the rope with her legs. When you see her at the side of the screen that is closest to you, press the Sprint button again and Lara will gain a higher momentum. The timing is perfect. When you see her swinging to the opposite side (away from you) and whilst being at the highest point, press the Jump button to leap from the rope. Note though that in some systems, you have to press the opposite direction key in order to make Lara turn, that is, press the left arrow key to make her turn right, and the right arrow key to make her turn left.

 

Second Time
You enter this level for the Second Time from the Trenches level.

Drive around to the left and use the extra boost to jump over the deep pit. You need to take a long run up and you had better begin from where you started the level. Make sure you press the Sprint button BEFORE driving up the ramp. If you attempt to use the extra boost whilst on the ramp, Lara will not make it. When you jump over the pit, keep pressing the Action button to drive up the slope that surrounds the pit. Drive to the right towards the taxi and then to the left, merrily running over two crocodiles in the process.

You should recognize this place. You need to drive back towards the Dragon. Just before you reach the Dragon, a swarm of locusts will attack, but keep driving in front of the dragon. Make your way back to Sergeant Azizus. Approach him on the motorbike to trigger the cut scene.

[Bug note for the PC players - If you are playing the un-patched version (that is, the pure .exe file you got from the CD), you may encounter a bug here. When you start the next level (Citadel) you are not able to press the F5, F6, and P keys - quick save, quick load, and Pause. To avoid this, approach Azizus on foot and then approach him on the motorbike to trigger the cut scene.]

In the cut scene Lara hops onto the ledge where Azizus is lying. She kneels in front of him and we then see them reaching the ammunition truck opposite the Dragon. Lara then puts Azizus onto a ledge. He tells her that she is a strong woman, and Lara asks him what she needs to do now that he has got the codes. Azizus points a gun at Lara and he tells her that is merely insurance against her stopping him from doing his duty. Someone needs to drive the ammunition truck in there, so he does. Lara hides behind a column and Azizus drives the truck into the dragon. We then see the dragon smash into pieces and Lara is now ready to enter the Citadel.
