Level 5: St. Francis Folly

Kills: 11
Supplies: 16
Artifacts: 6
Relics: 0
Additional Secrets: 0

The cut scene shows St. Francis Folly building, while we hear the voice of Lara's father "I've acquired new evidence that leads me to believe it is the Scion itself that is in some strange way, a vast library of information to rival even Alexandria. I am now convinced that, if I can obtain it, I will finally discover what happened to my bevoled Amelia." Lara is climbing up the rocks to the monastery at the same time. She picks up a can and realizes that someone else was here before her. "Oh, Pierre, litter bug."

[Checkpoint] Room with tall pillars - As soon as the level begins, draw weapons and proceed ahead. Two lions will appear behind the pillars, so kill them both.

In the cut scene, Lara hears a voice from a man that is talking to her. Lara recognizes his voice and advises Pierre to move on, because Natla does not honor her contracts. He tells her that they (Pierre and Natla) understand each other; he finds things for her and she rewards him handsomely. It is obvious that Lara has not spotted Pierre yet, that's why she points her guns around. Pierre thinks that since Lara seeks for the same things and believes her insticts, she is not trusted and is in second place. He, on the other hand, is a professional, since he focus on the job and gets paid. Lara tells him that there is more to life than money, but Pierre says that there is a difference between life and business. However, Lara has managed to get a piece of the Scion. Pierre offers a challenge: who is going to get the next piece?

[Checkpoint] Proceed ahead and step on the big circular plate. The camera will pan back and show a gate to open above. When you step off, the gate closes, so you need to find something and position it on the plate so the gate will remain open. Go to the other side and climb up the far right pillar, using its crevices. Turn around and jump to grab the crevice of the next pillar (the far left one, if the entrance to your back). Again, use its crevices to climb to the top. Jump to land on the next pillar (or grab it if necessary and pull up) and jump to the balcony on the right. If you enter the small room, you will see the Artifact behind the gate, but you will get it later. From the balcony, jump to the next ledge. Jump off the ledge and use the Grapple to grab the ring on the wall. Perform the wall run and jump to the passage on the other side.

Mural puzzle - You will reach an area with a mural which has some glowing diamonds on its body. [Checkpoint] Step on the pressure plate to turn them off. Go around the passage to reach a closed door with a mural. You will see that it has one diamond on its left eye (left as you face it) and another one on its sword. Go back to the first mural and shoot the correspondings diamonds. The camera will show the door opening, so go back there. Jump off the edge, use the Grapple to catch the ring on the wall and perform the wall run to reach the opposite ledge. Jump to grab the balcony and enter the small room. The mosaic shows that there are four diamonds you need to use: one on each sole, one on the hand and another one on the back. Return to the mural, step on the plate to turn the diamonds off and shoot the correspondings ones. The camera will show the gate behind you opening. [Checkpoint]

Go through it to reach a gold globe. Use the Grapple to catch both locks and pull them out. When you do that, the gold globe will fall down. [Checkpoint] Push it off the edge to throw it to the ground. From the balcony, jump to the left hand pillar and use its crevices to go down. Push the globe and position it on the circular plate. This will open the door. [Checkpoint] Again, climb up the far right pillar, jump to grab the crevice of the left one, climb to the top and this time jump to the balcony in front of the now open door.

Go through it and go to the left. Jump off the ledge and use the Grapple to catch the gold ring on the wall. Climb down the Grapple line and perform the wall run to reach the alcove on the left. Pick up the Large Medipack and drop to the ground. If you accidentally fall down before getting the Medipack, you can also catch the gold ring from the ledge to the left of the closed gate. The circular plate opens the gate, but again you need something to place on it. Use the switch to open the door that gets you back to the room with the tall pillars. [Checkpoint]

As soon as you exit, two lions will attack from behind the pillars. Immediately, enter the room and go up the steps where they cannot reach you. Shoot from there and if they exit the room, go down to lure them and return back. Once they are dead, exit the room and push/ pull the gold globe into the room. The gate above will close, but you do not need it anymore. Position the globe on the plate to open the gate. [Checkpoint]

Artifact #1 - Before leaving, take a look at the mural above the open door (the one that leads outside). It has seven diamonds on its body: one on each sole, one on the knee, one the back, one on the hand, one on the left eye (as you face it) and one on the sword. You need to go back to the mural, shoot the correspondings diamonds and open the gate that leads to the Artifact. Once you get it, return back here.

Tall room with central structure - Go through the gate and down the stairs to reach a tall room with a central structure. [Checkpoint] The deal here is to find four switches and open four doors. Each door hides one key, and all four keys will open the exit door, which is located at the bottom of this tall room.

As a start, you can see two switches: one on the left and one on the right. For now, jump to grab the top of the central structure and pull up. Go to the left to reach the end. There is an extended ledge with a ring at the front on the opposite wall. If you take a look on the right, you will see another gold ring that is attached to another ledge that you have to pull out by using the Grapple; pull it (see this screenshot to get oriented).

POSEIDON switch - Jump to the left hand ledge (or grab it if necessary and pull up) and then jump into the alcove on the left. From there, jump to grab the horizontal pole, swing and jump to land at the bottom of the stairs (the above sequence is shown in this screenshot). Go up them and use the switch to open the POSEIDON door and release two bats. The switch also extended a platform at the front, which can help you return back to the central structure. Do that and kill the bats. (The ledge you pulled out before leads to the ATLAS door, but since it is closed, do not go there yet.)

Drop to the lower ledge of the structure and, assuming you are facing the entrance, shoot the button in the alcove exactly below. This will extend a ledge at front of it which leads to the HEPHAESTUS door. Since it is closed, do not go there yet. Turn left (assuming you are still facing the entrance) and use the Grapple to catch the ring on the column (as shown here). Pull it to throw it down and make its other part land on the lower ledge of the structure.

Hang from the edge of the structure and drop to the lower ledge. If you take a look around, you will see the top part of a ladder and the column you pulled down before (and you are on the same level as the closed ATLAS door). Exactly below the ledge you extended by shooting the button is another ring that you have to pull in order to make another column fall down and land on the lower part of the structure (as shown in this screenshot).

HEPHAESTUS switch - For now, climb on the first fallen column and cross it to the end. Jump on the left hand ledge and pick up the Small Medipack. Jump to grab the opposite block, then the next one. Grab the crevice in the wall and shimmy around the corner. Jump to grab the ledge above, then the one at the bottom of the stairs. Pull up, go up the stairs and use the switch to open the HEPHAESTUS door. [Checkpoint] Again, the switch will extend a platform at the front, so you can return back to the central structure. If you wait for a bit, two bats will show up. Kill them and return to the top of the central structure.

(Note: If you die at this point and the game loads the last Checkpoint, the last pair of bats may not appear, changing your final statistics.)

Through HEPHAESTUS door - From the top of the structure, drop to the lower ledge and jump on the broken platform on the same level. From there, jump to the ledge you extended by shooting the button. Jump to grab the crevice in the wall on the right, then the edge of the alcove. Pull up and jump to grab the horizontal pole. Swing and jump to grab the ledge ahead. Release to grab the edge of the alcove and pull up (the above series of jumps are shown in this screenshot). Crawl into and head to the other side. Be careful here!!! If you have enabled the Automatic grab, do not just fall off the edge and wait for Lara to grab it. Sometimes, she falls to her death. Press the Crouch button to make her grab the edge. Traverse to the right and pull up.

[Alternative (quicker) method for reaching the HEPHAESTUS door - From the top of the central structure, jump to the platform in front of the POSEIDON switch. Climb on ledge ahead and go down the stairs on the left. Hang from the edge and release to grab the edge of the alcove below. You will have to press the Interact button and make Lara grab the edge with both hands. Shimmy to the right and pull up. The above sequence is shown in this screenshot. Thanks to RJ for the tip.]

Go through the door. [Checkpoint] The passage gets you to a switch that opens the gate, the latter of which falls down after a few secnds. If you are standing in front of it, it will kill Lara. Use the narrow ledges in the back left corner to reach the opening above the gate. Drop down at the other side and follow the next passage that gets you to a room with an electrified ball that throws harmful lighting on the floor. [Checkpoint] You have to step and thus press the four buttons on the floor; one in each corner (as shown in this screenshot). You have to wait for the buttons to come up, so you can step on them and make them go down. There are more squares that go up and down and the lighting hits only those that are up. So, use the lower "safe" squares to move around. Once you make it, the gates at the other side open, so enter the next room. [Checkpoint]

The key is behind a gate that you need to open. For now, locate the movable statue at the far right. Push/ pull it in one of the holes in the floor and make sure it faces the center of the room. There are two more holes, so you need to find two more statues. You have definitely noticed the big hammer on the left. If you step on the pressure plate below, the hammer will fall down, so do not stay there or you will kill Lara. There is a movable box nearby that you can push on the plate. The hammer will smash the box, revealing a statue. Push/ pull it in one of the holes and make sure it faces the center of the room.

Step on the plate and immediately step off. When the hammer falls down, grab its handhold and jump to grab the top. Pull up and jump to the taller platform with the Large Medipack. Pick it up and drop down. Do the same to reach the lower platform with the Shotgun Ammo. Pick it up and jump to grab the horizontal pole. Swing and jump to the ledge above the gate.

Artifact #2 - Enter the alcove on the left and pick up the Artifact.

Jump to grab the next pole. Swing and jump to the opposite platform. Push/ pull the movable box and throw it down. It will shatter, revealing the third statue. Drop down and position the statue in the last hole, making sure it faces the center of the room.

The camera shows the pressure plate, which means that you need to step on it for the last time. The hammer is still active, so quickly step off. When the hammer hits the plate, the gate to the Key and the exit doors open. [Checkpoint] Go through the gate and get the Key of Hephaestus from the pedestal. [Checkpoint] Pass once more the electrified ball and leave the room. Use the switch to open the gate which opens after a few seconds, giving you the time to jump and grab its handhold. The gate closes after a couple of seconds, so when you hear the third "tick", press the Jump button to grab the opening above. Drop down at the other side and return back to the room with the central structure. [Checkpoint] On your return, a ledge extends, so you can reach the central structure.

Back to the room with the central structure/ DAMOCLES switch - Jump to grab the ledge on the right pillar of the structure and traverse around the corner. Release to grab the lower ledge, traverse a bit to the right and pull up. You are on the same level as the closed ATLAS door. Facing that door, grab the ladder on the left and climb down. Release to drop on the lower platform. Go to the other side of it, to the part that seems broken, and notice the switch in the alcove below. This opens the DAMOCLES door. To reach the switch, jump to the slide on the right of the switch (as shown in this screenshot). Use it to open the door. [Checkpoint]

(Note: You can go to this alcove by also using the ledges close to the ATLAS door, but this is time consuming, since you will have to go up and down more times).

On the ground/ATLAS switch - Once you have used the switch, hang from the edge of the alcove, release to grab the lower ledge and drop down. To the left and around the walkway is the switch that opens the ATLAS door. [Checkpoint]

Climbing up the central structure - Drop to the ground and approach the central structure. Climb on the lower block and pick up the Shotgun Ammo. Jump to grab the next ledge and pull up. Grab the crevice of the pillar and shimmy around the corner. Jump to grab the ladder on the right and climb to the top. Turn left and notice the ring on the wall (as shown here). Use the Grapple to catch it and pull the ledge out. This ledge leads to the POSEIDON door, but we will climb up the structure and visit the rest three doors downwards. Facing the ATLAS door, locate the stone block on the left. Climb on it and jump to grab the ledge of the opposite pillar. Traverse around the two corners and jump to grab the upper ledge. Traverse around the corner and jump to grab the platform on the right (it is the one from where you jumped for the DAMOCLES switch).

With the ATLAS door to your back, jump to the opposite ledge then jump to grab the crevice in the left hand pillar. Traverse around the corner and jump to grab the upper ledge. Jump to grab the ledge on the left, then the one above; pull up. You are again on the ledge, which is on the same level as the ATLAS door. Climb on the block and jump to grab the crevice in the pillar. Traverse around the two corners and jump to grab the edge of the platform; pull up (to the left is the button you shot before). Jump to the opposite ledge, grab the crevice of the pillar and traverse around the corner. Jump to grab the ledge above, then the platform above. Pull up and you are back at the top of the central structure.

Top of central structure/ Heading to ATLAS door - Go around the platform and jump on the ledge you extended when you first entered this room. Jump to grab the ledge on the right and drop down (see this screenshot to get oriented). Hang from the edge, shimmy right and around the corner, and release to grab the lower ledge. Drop to the slide and jump to grab the crevice ahead before falling to your death. Traverse around the corner and pull up.

Artifact #3 - Before going through the door, let's go for a Secret. (You may want to go through the ATLAS door and create a Checkpoint, in case you die on your try to get the Artifact). Hang from the edge you came from, release to grab the lower ledge and traverse to the left (as shown in this screenshot). When you reach the end, jump to grab the next ledge. Jump to grab the horizontal pole behind you, swing and jump into the alcove. Climb on the block and pick up the Artifact. Carefully, jump to grab the pole and make your way back to the ATLAS door the same way you came.

Through ATLAS door - [Checkpoint] Follow the passage to reach a switch that opens the door after a couple of seconds, giving you the time to jump and grab its handhold (do not even think to enter, because the spikes with kill you). The gate closes after a couple of seconds, so when you hear the third "tick", press the Jump button to grab the opening above. Ignore the pole you see, and drop down at the other side. Follow the passage as it goes. [Checkpoint]

Be careful of the deep pit, because it is a long drop down. Grab the mechanism and rotate it to extend two stone platforms above the pit, which will help you get across. When you do the latter, go up the ramp and notice the ledge on the left. Grab it, jump to grab the next one and traverse to the left. Jump to grab the ledge above and pull up. Pick up the Caliber Pistol Ammo and drop down to the right. Use the switch to extend two sticks above the pit, which will create a horizontal pole. [Checkpoint]

Drop back down and go to the top of the ramp. Be careful, because the spikes are harmful. Enable the Manual Aim and shoot the two buttons alongside Atlas' statue. Every time you shoot a button, the camera shows a row of spikes to be removed. After the second shot, Atlas' globe will fall down, so immediately run down the ramp. Keep running until you reach the pit. Jump to grab the pole, but do not swing because the globe will hit you. Once you grab the pole, quickly press the Jump button to land on the other side. The globe will destroy the pole and fall into the pit.

Use the mechanism again to extend the stone platforms and make it across. Go to the top of the ramp and pick up the Shotgun Ammo. Enter the alcove and get the Key of Atlas from the pedestal. Go down the ramp and use the now broken pillar on the left to reach the ledge above. Pick up the Small Medipack.

Artifact #4 - Climb on the ledge to the left and pick up the Artifact.

Drop back down and use the switch to extend the stone platforms above the pit. They will start opening again, so drop to the ground and cross the pit. Go through the passage, use the switch and jump to grab the handhold of the door. Once it opens, jump to grab the pole behind you. The door will close, so swing and jump to grab the opening above the door. Drop down at the other side and return back to the room with the central structure. [Checkpoint] On your return, a ledge extends, so you can reach the central structure.

Back to the room with the central structure/ Heading to DAMOCLES door - Take a running jump to grab the opposite ledge of the structure and pull up. Just on the right is a ladder. Climb it down and drop to the platform. Turn right and jump to grab the opposite ledge. Pull up and climb on the column you pulled down before. Cross it to the end and climb on the right hand ledge. Pull the movable cage and hang from the right edge of the ledge. Jump to grab the next ledge and traverse around the corner. Drop down and pick up the Small Medipack. Make your way back to the fallen column the same way you came.

This time climb on the left hand ledge and push the movable cage. Jump back to the right hand ledge and jump to grab the crevice above the left ledge. Shimmy all the way to the left, release to grab the lower ledge and jump to grab the ledge on the left. Traverse around the corner and release to grab the lower ledge. Drop down and pick up the Small Medipack. Hang from the edge of the platform and release to grab the lower ledge. Traverse around the corner and drop down. Slide down the slope to land in front of the DAMOCLES door.

Through DAMOCLES door - Go through the door. [Checkpoint] The switch opens the door, but it closes when Lara grabs its handhold (her weight makes the door close). Use the Grapple to catch the block above the door and pull it down. If the block falls on Lara, it will kill her, so be careful. Use the switch and jump on the block. Allow the door open a bit, jump to grab its handhold and jump to grab the opening before the door closes. Drop down at the other side and follow the passage. Step on the pressure plate to open the door. [Checkpoint]

[Alternative method and bug warning: Some people use another way for getting into the room. After using the switch that opens the door, they push the block beneath it. That way, the block prevents the door from closing. If you do it that way, climb on the block, jump to grab the handhold and climb into the opening above. In any case, do NOT pull the block out. Sometimes, the switch does not return to its original position (which is up) and you cannot open door. If this happens, you cannot get to the other side. Also, make sure that the block lands with the rings at the top and bottom, and not to the sides. If the latter happens, the block will not be tall enough and the gate will not open properly (thanks to Jerry for the note). In this case, follow the method as suggested in the walkthrough above.]

When you enter the room, take a look above to spot the swords. They are harmless now, so freely proceed and enter the next room. Go to the back where you will find a Small Medipack and some Caliber Pistol Ammo. Go to the center of the room and pick up the Key of Damocles. Immediately jump away, because the swords from above will fall down. When this is done, the exit door closes, the swords rises up in the previous room and the camera alerts you for the hanging swords. This also made some ledges fall down, so you can exit.

Go up the sloped ledge at the back of the room and use the Grapple to catch the gold ring on the wall. Perform the wall run to reach either L shaped platform. From there, jump to the ledge in the middle, then on the pillar on the right. Jump in the right hand window and use the lever to remove some swords from the floor of the first room. [Checkpoint] Drop to the ground and return to the previous room [Checkpoint], being careful of the sword that will fall down.

The left hand way is blocked by the swords, so go to the right and around the corner. When you reach the end, the camera shows the area from above. You have to make a play with the swords in the middle and reach the other side of the room intact. You can stand for a second only on the white squares (as shown in this screenshot), passing from the red ones. Once you make it, do not rush to proceed. The hanging swords will fall down, so you have to move cautiously.

Go around to the left until you reach a low broken pillar. Climb on it and jump to grab the crevice in the wall. Jump to grab the one above, traverse to the left around the corner and pull up in front of the window. Pull the lever to remove the swords behind this window and some others close to the ones you passed through before. [Checkpoint] That way, you will not have to go through the same process again.

Artifact #5 - Drop to ground and again climb on the low broken pillar. Jump over the swords to land on the other side. Enter the second room and, once again, make your way to the platfrom in the middle of the room. This time go to the left and jump to grab the ledge of the left hand window. Pull up and pick up the Artifact.

Drop back down and make your way to the window where you pulled the last switch. Grab the vertical structure and jump to grab the pillar. Pull up and jump to the next pillar. Jump to grab the other vertical structure and release to land in front of the window. Pick up the Large Medipack and jump to grab the lower ledge on the wall. Jump to grab the upper one and shimmy left. You now need to jump to the left and use the Grapple to catch the gold ring above. Perform the wall run and jump to land on the pillar behind and a bit to the left.

(The painful jump: This part can end up really frustrating. Lara does not land on the pillar no matter what. Instead, she keeps falling to the ground. Are you sure you are using the wall run properly? This page gives detailed instructions.)

Jump from pillar to pillar until you reach the last one. Jump to grab the ledge on the wall, then use the rest ones in order to reach the ledge above the door. Use the mechanism to open the door and drop down. Go through the door and follow the passage. Use the switch and jump to grab the handhold of the door. The door will open, so once you hear the third "tick", press Jump to grab the opening above. Drop down at the other side and follow the passage to return back to the room with the central structure. [Checkpoint] On your return, a ledge extends, but this time you cannot reach the central structure.

Back to the room with central structure/ Heading to POSEIDON door - Hang from either side of the ledge and drop down. Drop to the ground and climb up the central structure until you reach the first ledge (after climbing up the ladder). Turn left and jump on the ledge you extended before. Jump to grab the ledge on the right, then the next one. Jump to grab the next ledge, then the next two above. Pull up, climb on the right hand ledge and crawl under the rock. At the end, drop in front of the POSEIDON door.

Through POSEIDON door - Go through the door. [Checkpoint] Follow the passage and use the switch. Jump to grab the handhold and wait for the door to open. When you hear the third "tick" press Jump to grab the opening above. Drop down at the other side and draw weapons. Three rats will show up from around the corner, so get rid of them. The passage gets you to a room with a pool. [Checkpoint] Pick up the Small Medipack from the back of the room and jump into the water. Swim down where you will find a lever. Pull it to open the nearby gate. Swim through it and follow the tunnel to another room which is half-filled with water. [Checkpoint]

Artifact #6 - Jump into the water and locate the lever on the central column. Pull it to open a gate just above. Surface, climb into the alcove and pick up the Artifact.

Jump into the water and climb into the alcove to the right of the entrance (as you face it) where you will find a Small Medipack. Jump again into the water and climb on the circular platfrom in the middle. Notice the lever that you cannot use now. Start climbing up the structure until you reach the top. Follow the walkway that leads to a fish statue. Pick up the Caliber Pistol Ammo and pull the movable box to allow the water flow from the statue's mouth. This will fill the room with water until the ledge you are. Take a mental note of the opening to the right of the statue (as you face it). Now jump into the water and climb on the ledge opposite the statue. There is another movable box there, so push it into the water.

[Note: You can take a shortcut here and avoid draining and filling again the room with water. After pulling the block from the fish's mouth, cross the bridge in front of the closed gate. Turn left and jump to grab the edge of the alcove to the left of the gate (as shown in this screenshot). This can also be done before filling the room with water, but if you do not make it, you will fall to your death. Thanks to dinahcat (PS2) for the tip and xRikux89 who verified it for the PC version.]

Jump into the water and pull the lever you could not use before. This will open a hatch and release a wooden platfrom which will get stuck beneath a ledge. Surface and climb out of the water. Go again to the fish statue and this time push the movable box towards the its mouth. Make sure you center the box to the mouth or the water will push the box back. This will stop the water from falling, bringing the water's level back to its original level. Jump into the water and climb on the ledge with the second movable box. Push it towards the mouth of the fish to stop the water from falling down. This will lower the water's level even more and make the wooden platform accessible.

Go to the entrance and use the ledges on the right to go down. You have to use the Grapple and pull the wooden platform beneath the opening, which is located at the top of the room. Use the ledges you came from to go back to the circular platform above. Pull the movable box to fill the room with water and raise the wooden platform. Before proceeding, correct the platform's position and make sure it is beneath the opening. Climb up the central structure to the top and pull the other box to fill the room with more water and bring the wooden platform to the top. Jump on it and jump to grab the edge of the opening. Grab the crevice in the wall and then jump to grab the opening on the right. Drop down at the other side and get the Key of Poseidon from the pedestal.

Use the switch to open the door and drop into the water. Swim down and through the opening you first entered this room. Return back to the pool and climb out of the water. If you think that your breath is not enough, you can push the top box to stop the water from falling down, thus emptying half of the room (thanks to Dimi for this tip). Follow the passage and use the switch. Jump to grab the stone part of the door and wait for it to open. When you hear the third "tick" press Jump to grab the opening above. Drop down at the other side and return back to the room with the central structure. [Checkpoint] On your return, a ledge extends, so you can reach the central structure.

Once you have all four Keys - Jump to land on the ledge of the central structure. Make your way to the ground and use the four Keys to open the door and end the level.
