Level 11: Sanctuary of the Scion

Kills: 24 (28 if you re-visit two ledges, high in the area with the Sphinx)
Supplies: 10 (plus a pair of Mini SMGs)
Artifacts: 2
Relics: 1
Additional Secrets: 1

[Checkpoint] The level begins where the previous one left you. Go through the doors you opened by placing the four artifacts an up the stairs. Draw weapons and kill the two mummies that attack. Once you are done, enter the room with the four small obelisks. At the back, you will find some Shotgun Ammo and a Small Medipack.

Obelisk puzzle - If you check the hieroglyphics on the walls, you will see that they are mirrored. You have to turn the four obelisks and make the same paintings face each other (mirror them). The paintings that have to face each other must be the inner ones (as shown in this screenshot). There are four paintings on each obelisk, so you have to mirror four sets. It is not necessary to follow the position of the hieroglyphics on the walls. For example, the right hand wall (as you enter) shows two blue vases. This does not mean that the right hand obelisks must mirror the blue vases. To solve the puzzle, turn obelisks #1 and #3 twice (back right and far left ones if the entrance is to your back). The direction does not matter. When you do it correctly, a pillar rises up.

Once you solve the puzzle - Climb up the pillar to the top and use the ledges and ladder to reach the passage above. Follow it to a pit with traps. [Checkpoint] Jump on the pillar when the wall is closed. Until you reach it, the wall will have opened. Quickly jump to grab the crevice on the left, then the one above. You are familiar by now to the decorative scarabs slide down once you grab them, aren't you? Jump to grab the decorative scarab on the right and quickly jump to grab the one behind you. Quickly jump to grab the crevice above. Wait for the wall to open and jump to grab the crevice beyond, then the ledge behind. Follow the passage to the next area. [Checkpoint]

Area with Sphinx - What you see in front of you is the back side of a Sphinx. You can also see an opening and a switch on each side, but you cannot reach any of these at the moment. Climb down the left hand ladder and drop to the ground. Pick up the Shotgun and Caliber Pistol Ammo's and head to the front side of the Sphinx. If the two rats have already reached you, kill them; otherwise, do it after the brief cut scene. If the rats do not appear at all, make sure you have crossed the part between the long and short ladders (this part is outlined in this screenshot)

The brief cut scene gives a glimpse of the front side of the Sphinx.

With the Sphinx to your back, go to the far left corner where you will find a Large Medipack. Return back and climb up the ladder opposite the Sphinx. Here you have the option of going left and right. You have to visit both ways and it does not matter which one you follow first.

Left hand way of the ladder - Jump to grab the ledge on the left, then jump to land on the broken stairs. Jump to the next stairs and vault onto the low block. [Checkpoint] Climb up the next two ledges and slide down the slope. Jump to grab the ledge ahead and pull up. Follow the walkway until you reach the third pillar on the left. Use its crevices to reach the second pillar and again use the crevices to reach the third pillar. Climb to the topmost crevice and jump to grab the handhold on the wall behind you. Climb up the rest handholds to reach the top.

Draw weapons! Two flying mutants that throw fireballs attack, so kill them. Be careful, because the fireballs can push you off the edge. Go to the other side of the ledge and jump to grab the horizontal pole. Jump to grab the next one, then the crevice ahead. Traverse around the two corners and jump to the ledge behind you. Carefully make your way down and use the switch to raise a platform between the stairs next to you, so you can have a direct access here. [Checkpoint]

(Note: If, for some reason, you visit again the ledge where the two flying mutants attacked after loading the above Checkpoint, two more will show up.)

Left hand opening (if the entrance is to your back) - Go through the opening and follow the passage to a set of crashing stone blocks. When they open, run past them. You reach a second set of crashing stone blocks, but this time they are bigger. The time that is given is not enough to make it accross by jumping on the ledges, but there is a gap between the stones when Lara lands on the ledges. So, every time you jump on a ledge, crouch to avoid the stones. Follow the passage to reach the next room. [Checkpoint]

[Note: The completion of the next part (that includes the usage of four vertical panels) can be done in one round without dropping to the pool during the process. The walkthrough covers this procedure, but if you accidentally fall into the water, you can still use the rest panels by making more jumps and climbings. This video shows the "one round". If you want to watch a better quality (8 MB), click here.]

Room with upside-down obelisk - The stairs on the right lead to a switch, but you cannot do anything with it at the moment, so jump into the pool. Pick up the Small Medipack from the bottom and climb out of the water using the low ledge. You can see four small obelisks in the pool and you need to raise them. Vault on the broken ledge and jump to grab the handhold of the vertical stone panel (as shown in this screenshot) and keep jumping up until you reach the topmost one. Lara's weight will lower the panel, raising the obelisk behind you at the same time. When the panel reaches the bottom, it will get locked. The camera shows you that this procedure also extends a ledge above the pool.

Climb up the obelisk you just raised (there are handholds you can use) and jump to grab the small square ledge behind you. Jump to grab the crevice on the right, then the next vertical panel. Jump to grab the topmost handhold and wait until the panel reaches the bottom and gets locked. The obelisk behind you has been raised and the ledge above the pool has been extended more. Jump to grab the obelisk behind you and traverse around the corner. Jump to grab the ledge that has been extended and pull up (see this screenshot to get oriented).

Notice the gold ring on the left hand wall. Use the Grapple to catch it and perform the wall run to reach the crevice of the opposite wall. From there, jump to grab the third vertical panel and climb to the top (the above procedure is shown in this screenshot). Again, wait until it reaches the bottom and gets locked. The obelisk behind you has been raised and the ledge above the pool has been extended even more. Jump to grab the obelisk behind you and traverse around the corner. Jump to grab the extended ledge and pull up.

Go to the other side of the extended ledge and jump to the ledge in front of the closed door. From there, you can jump and grab the horizontal pole on the left (as you face the closed door see this screenshot). This and the next one slide down when you grab them, so quickly jump to grab the crevice in the wall. From there, release to grab the lower one and then jump to grab the fourth vertical panel. Climb to the topmost handhold and wait until the panel reaches the bottom and gets locked. The obelisk behind you has been raised and the camera will show that the ledge extends even more, creating a bridge. It then focuses on the switch at the top of the room.

(Note: If you fall into the water before using the fourth panel, climb out of the water using the low ledge. Climb up the first obelisk you raised and jump to the small square ledge behind you. From there, jump to the crevice on the left, then jump to grab the ladder. There are four horizontal poles on your left which slide down when you grab them, so you have to be quick and jump from pole to pole until you reach the crevice at the other side.)

Going back to the top of the room - Drop into the pool and climb out of the water. Climb up the first obelisk you raised and jump to the small square ledge behind you. From there, jump to the crevice on the left, then jump to grab the ladder. Climb up as much as you can and jump to grab the left ladder. Again, climb up as much as you can and jump to grab the right hand ladder. Climb to the top and jump to grab the crevice on the left, then the next one. Jump to the safe ledge and go down the stairs; use the switch.

The cut scene shows the upside-down obelisk to lower. It throws an energy light to all four pillars, which opens the door at the end of the bridge.

[Checkpoint] You can get to the bridge by either going down the ledges or dropping on it directly from here (losing health). Cross the bridge and enter the room. The door closes behind you and a mutant attacks. Kill it and get the Ankh Key #1 from the pedestal. On getting the Key, the door opens. This also opens the gate above the pool. [Checkpoint]

Back to the area with the Sphinx - Drop into the pool and climb into the opening. Follow the passage to return back to the area with the Sphinx. Draw weapons, because a centaur is waiting for you outside. He is lurking at the front side, so stay sharp.

Right way of the ladder - Climb up the ladder opposite the Sphinx. This time, jump to grab the crevice on the right, then the next two poles that get you to the broken stairs. [Checkpoint] The right hand way does not lead anywhere, so climb up the ladder. Climb on the stone block to the left and pick up the Shotgun Ammo and Large Medipack. Drop back down and follow the walkway. Jump to grab the crevice in the wall, then the next one. To make sure Lara will grab the crevice, run and jump close to the wall. Jump to grab the ledge and pull up. Carefully, drop to the walkway below. Facing the Sphinx, approach the right hand pillar. Use its crevices to reach the top. Immediately draw weapons! Two flying mutants attack and their fireballs can throw you down, so quickly get rid of them.

Secret - Take a look at the top of the Sphinx' head. The item you see is a pair of Mini SMGs. To get there, jump off the edge and use the Grapple to catch the ring on the ceiling. Swing and jump to the head. Pick up the guns and use the Grapple again to swing back to the ledge you came from.

Jump to grab the horizontal pole, swing and jump to grab the opposite ledge. Carefully, make your way down and use the switch to raise a platform between the stairs next to you, so you can have a direct access here. [Checkpoint]

(Note: If, for some reason, you visit again the ledge where the two flying mutants attacked after loading the above Checkpoint, two more will show up.)

Right hand opening (if the entrance is to your back) - Go through the opening and follow the passage to the next pit. There are two walls that open and close and two horizontal poles between them. The first one however slides back in and then out again, so you have to be rather quick. The pole extends when the first wall is about to close, but this is the best time to jump and grab it, because if you hesitate, you will not have time to complete the process. Once you grab the first pole, keep swinging and jump to grab the second pole when the second wall opens. Quickly jump to grab the opposte ledge. If the first pole slides back in and you fall down, you can climb back up and try again. Follow the passage to reach the next room. [Checkpoint]

[Note: The completion of the next part (that includes the usage of four vertical panels) can be done in one round, dropping into the pool once during the process. IMPORTANT: To avoid backtracking, the panel beneath the entrance (back left corner) must be done either second, as it will be desribed below, or first (by going first for the Artifact and then jumping for the panel). This video shows the "one round". If you want to watch a better quality (8 MB), click here.

If you do not make either way, you will have to do the following: Lower the far left panel and make your way to the extended ledge by using the raised obelisk. Use your Grapple to catch the ring of the panel (as shown in this screenshot) and pull it to make the panel go up. Jump to grab the horizontal pole, swing and jump to grab the crevice ahead. From the topmost crevice, jump to grab the handhold of the panel. Lara's weight will make it go down, so quickly jump to grab the handhold above, then the crevice on the left. From there, jump to grab the panel beneath the entrance (the above procedure is shown in this screenshot). After lowering this panel, all others can be done without problems.]

Room with upside-down obelisk - The room looks familiar and once again you have to first raise the four obelisks in the water before using the switch. Turn right and jump to grab the crevice in the wall, then the next one. Jump to grab the ladder and climb to the bottom. Jump to grab the right hand ladder and again climb to the bottom. From there, jump to grab the crevice on the left, then release to grab the lower one. Jump to grab the handhold of the vertical panel and keep jumping up until you reach the topmost one. Lara's weight will lower the panel, raising the obelisk behind you. When the panel reaches the bottom, it will get locked. The camera shows you that this procedure also extends a ledge above the pool.

Jump to grab the obelisk you just raised and climb to the top. Jump to the small square ledge behind you and jump to grab the crevice on the right, then the one above (as shown in this screenshot). There are four horizontal poles behind you that slide down when you grab them. So, be quick and jump from pole to pole until you reach the crevice at the other side. Jump to grab the second vertical panel and climb to the top. Wait until it reaches the bottom and gets locked. The obelisk behind you has been raised and the ledge above the pool has been extended more.

Drop into the pool and climb out of the water using the square ledge. Jump to land on the obelisk and jump to grab the crevice ahead, then the next one. Jump to grab the third vertical panel and climb to the top. Wait until it reaches the bottom and gets locked. The obelisk behind you has been raised and the ledge above the pool has been extended even more. Jump to grab the obelisk behind you and climb to the top. Traverse around the corner and jump to grab the extended ledge; pull up. Jump to grab the horizontal pole, swing and jump to grab the crevice ahead. Jump to grab the fourth vertical panel, climb to the topmost handhold and wait until the panel reaches the bottom and gets locked. The obelisk behind you has been raised and the camera will show that the ledge extends even more, creating a bridge. It then focuses on the switch at the top of the room.

Going back to the top of the room - Jump to grab the obelisk behind you and traverse around the corner. Jump to grab the bridge and pull up. Go to the end and turn to face the left pair of poles. Use them to reach the crevice in the wall. Climb up the rest crevices and jump to grab the ladder. Climb to the top and jump to grab the next ladder. Climb to the top and jump to grab the crevice on the right, then the next one. Jump to the safe ledge and go down the stairs. use the switch.

The cut scene shows the upside-down obelisk to lower. It throws an energy light to all four pillars, which opens the door at the end of the bridge.

Artifact #1 - Go back up the stairs and once again, make your way down. When you reach the bottom of the second ladder, jump to grab the sill of the doorway (as shown in this screenshot). Traverse to the right around the corner and drop down. Pick up the Artifact, grab the sill again and traverse back. Drop to the bridge.

When you enter the room, the door closes behind you and a mutant attacks. Kill it and get the Ankh Key #2 from the pedestal. On getting the Key, the door opens. This also opens the gate above the pool. [Checkpoint]

Back to the area with the Sphinx - Drop into the pool and climb out of the water. Go through the opening and follow the passage to return back to the area with the Sphinx. Draw weapons, because two centaurs are waiting for you outside. They are lurking at the front side, so stay sharp. Once they are dead, go up the stairs in front of the Shinx and use the two Keys to open the door. [Checkpoint]

Underneath the Sphinx\ Room with two huge statues - Go through the door and down the ramps, killing seven rats and picking up some Shotgun Ammo on your way. You reach a ledge above a pool with two huge statues. Pick up the Small Medipack and take a look at the other side to spot the opening. This is where you need to go, but the water's level cannot help you reach it. So, you have to find a way to raise the water level and reach the opening.

Jump into the pool and swim between the two statues. Dive down and swim to the bottom where you will find a lever. Pull it to lower the water's level until the statues' feet. Swim back and climb on the ledge of the right hand statue (as you return back). Ckimb on the stone block and jump to grab the next two crevices of the foot. Jump to grab the horizontal pole behind you and jump to grab the crevice of the other foot before the pole slides down. Traverse around the foot and jump to grab the gold ring on the wall. Perform the wall run and jump to grab the ledge on the other side. Pull up and climb up the ladder. Press Jump to leap off the ladder and grab the handhold behind you. Jump to grab the upper handhold, then the next one on the left. Jump to grab the next one above and traverse around the statue's hand.

First scarab puzzle - The four scarabs on the wall are mechanisms that rotate when you shoot them. The paintings on the floor show the position that the scarabs on the wall must have. Each scarab rotates 45 degrees; the left ones anticlockwise and the right ones clockwise. Soot the top left scarab four times, the bottom left twice, the bottom right four times and the top right twice (their correct position is shown in this screenshot). This will open the gate above. Climb into the alcove and use the switch to raise the water level until the statues' knees. [Checkpoint]

[Note (contains SPOILERS): What follows is a series of backtrackings in order to open a gate that leads to the Relic. Apart from climbing up and down the statues, you will also have to pass through a timed gate three times. The walkthrough below covers the normal procedure, but there is a shortcut you can take and completely avoid the timed gate and the block that you have to push down. If you want to take this shortcut, see this page and skip the next four paragraphs. Thanks to dinahcat for the shortcut.]

Drop back down and climb up the ladder. Jump to grab the crevice of the arm and traverse around. Jump to grab the crevice above, then the next two on the right. Shimmy to the end and jump to grab the horizontal pole behind you. Swing and jump to grab the opposite crevice. From there, jump to grab the ankh symbol. This will open a gate on the other statue, but it is timed. So, release to drop into the pool and quickly swim to reach the gate. It will be quicker if you swim on the surface and dive after reaching the front side of the statue. Once you pass through the gate, surface and climb out of the water. Then climb to the front side of the statue.

Opening the gate that leads to the Relic - (This screenshot shows the block and the ankh symbol that you will use in a while.) Notice the movable block on the ledge below. Push it to throw it in the water. Jump into the pool and swim between the statues. Once again, use the lever to lower the water level until the statues' feet. Swim back to the block and position it beneath the timed gate. Climb up the ledges of the other statue until you reach the ledge where you solved the scarab puzzle. Continue climbing up the ledges and crevices until you reach the ankh symbol that opens the timed gate. Once you grab it and open the gate, drop into the pool. Swim back and climb on the ledge of the statue that has the block. Climb on it and quickly pass through the gate before it closes. Use the crevices to reach the ledge above. Exit to the front side and drop to the ledge where the block initially was. Hang from the edge, shimmy to the right and release to grab the crevice of the foot. Traverse to the right and jump to grab the ankh symbol. This opens a gate on the same side of this statue.

Yet another time, climb up the ledges of the other statue until you reach the ledge where you solved the scarab puzzle. Use the switch again to raise the water level until the statue's knees. [Checkpoint] Drop back down and climb up the ladder. Once more, make your way to the ankh symbol that opens the timed gate. Once you grab it, drop to the pool and quickly make your way to the gate.

Second scarab puzzle - Once you pass the gate, notice the paintings on the floor. You will have to solve one more scarab puzzle after climb out of the water. Shoot the top left scarab twice, leave the bottom left as it is, shoot the bottom right twice and the top right four times (their correct position is shown in this screenshot). This will open the gate above, so climb into the opening and use the switch to raise the water level until the statues' arms. Swim outside and head to other statue. Swim through the opening (where you used the switch after solving the scarab puzzle) and climb out of the water. [Checkpoint]

Grab the decorative scarab and quickly jump to grab the crevice above. There are two horizontal poles behind you that slide down when you grab them, so quickly use them to reach the crevice at the other side. Then traverse around the corner and pull into the opening. Use the handholds on the right to reach the top. Go to the other side of the ledge and jump to grab the ankh symbol. This will raise the water level even more, making the ledge above accessible.

Relic - Before climbing there, do not forget the Relic. Swim to the gate you opened and get the Horus Idol. Swim back outside and surface. Climb out of the water using the square ledge.

(Note: You can go and get the Relic before raising the water level. If you are not fast enough and you keep drowing Lara, the Checkpoint will get you back to the room with the two horizontal poles. You can get the Relic first, then raise the water level.)

Room with pillars - Go through the opening and follow the passage to reach a room with many pillars. [Checkpoint] Two centaurs and two mummies will attack. Equip a powerful weapon and take the advantage of the bullet time to kill them quicker. If you have troubles with them, run back to the room with the statues and jump into the water. If you are lucky, a couple of the threats will follow you and fall into the water (as shown in this screenshot - thanks to bertys30 for the tip). This will not change your final statistics, since the game will count them as kills.

There is a closed door at the end of the room and a block on each side, where you have to use the two pieces of Scion you have found until now. To reach each block, you have to use the pillars' crevices, but before doing that, let's go for a Secret which is in an alcove at the far left of the room.

Artifact #2 - As you enter the room, start with the first redish pillar on the right. Use its crevices to reach the second redish pillar. From the topmost crevice, you have to jump and use the Grapple to grab the gold ring on the ceiling. From there, you have to swing and jump to grab the crevice of the fourth pillar on the left side of the room (assuming the entrance is to your back). From the topmost crevice, jump to grab the fifth pillar. From the middle crevice, jump to grab the crevice of the inner gray pillar. Climb to the topmost crevice and jump to the alcove with the Artifact; pick it up.

Do not drop down. Instead, jump to grab the pillar you came from. From the topmost crevice, jump to grab the fifth redish pillar you came from. Again, from the topmost crevice, jump to the nearby block (the left one if the entrance is to your back). Use the Scion of Qualopec to activate the mechanism and remove half of the bars that block the exit. [Checkpoint]

Drop down and go back to the entrance. Again, climb up the first pillar and use its crevices to reach the second pillar. From the topmost crevice, jump to grab the second inner gray pillar. Climb to the topmost crevice, traverse around and jump to grab with your Grapple the gold ring on the wall. You have to perform the wall run and jump to grab the fourth gray pillar. Once there, climb to the topmost crevice and jump to grab the fifth gray pillar. Again, climb to the topmost crevice and jump to grab the fifth redish pillar. Climb to the top and jump to grab the block. Pull up and use the Scion of Tihocan to activate the mechanism and remove the other half bars, thus opening the exit. Drop down and go throuhg it.

In the cut scene, Lara approaches the pedestal and grabs the piece of Scion. The place starts shaking, but a door opens at the other side. Lara manages to escape and when she exits, she fits all pieces together. Again, she receives a vision. It is the one she saw when she fit the first two pieces at the end of Tihocan. This time, the vision continues from where it was left. The two rulers ask the woman to defend herself for her actions in this council. The woman says that Atlantis is in ruin and everything must burn. Only then can the Seventh Age begin. For using her Scion against the other rulers, Tihocan punishes her and expels her from the sacred order of the three, and condemn her to shame in the frozen limbo of eternity.

When Lara awakes from the vision, Natla is standing next to her and grabs the Scion from her hands. A man grabs Lara from behind and two other takes her guns. While Natla examines the Scion, Lara recognizes her as the Queen of Atlantis and concludes that the Scion holds its history. She then asks Natla what the Seventh Age is. Natla assumes that Lara cannot get far in order to see. She then orders her men to kill her.

Be prepared for an Interactive cut scene. Press the correct buttons to save Lara from the men's shots.

When you save Lara from the threats, she jumps into the water. Once she surfaces, she watches a car leaving. She climbs out of the water, rides a bike and tries to reach the car. Natla and her men are already in a boat. Lara uses her Grapple to reach the boat, and once she climbs on it, she opens a hatch to get inside.
