Technical Advice » The Last Revelation

Tomb Raider 4 was originally designed to run on Windows 95/98/ME. To install Tomb Raider 4 on Windows 2000/XP/Vista follow the guidelines below.

Essential Software

» Tomb Raider Series XP/Vista Multipatch (Download - Freeware) Documentation
Download and install this patch. The installation program will automatically backup your current files in a sub folder called backup. The fix prevents game crashes in full screen mode at high resolutions and improves the saved game loading speed. When this patch is installed do not use Windows 98 compatibility mode.

» Rad Video Tools (Download)
Core Design used RAD Tools' Bink Video true-color video codec to produce the Full Motion Videos in Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation. The RAD Video Tools are compatible with Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000 and XP. If you are experiencing problems with the in game FMV videos use Rad Tools to play them externally.

Installing the Game

The installation program will run ok on Windows XP/2000 and should install normally. Once the installation is complete exit the autorun menu by pressing Cancel. You cannot use the Autorun menu to play the game.

Download and install theTomb Raider Series XP/Vista Multipatch (Download - Freeware) before playing the game as you may experience crashes and slow loading times.
Common Problems

» The game crashes when using high screen resolutions.
Download and install the TR4 patch which fixes the game crashing when using high resolutions.

» The game still crashes after installing TR4 Patch and I have a nVidia graphics card.
nVidia drivers version 81.98 to 83.62 can cause the game to crash. Update the drivers and install WinXP/2000 84.21 version or Later. nVidia Driver Site

» It takes a long time to load a saved game.
Download and install the TR4 patch. This will dramatically improve the loading time.

» Desert Railroad Loading Error.
If you experience some problems loading levels, especially the Desert Railroad level upon completion of Guardian of Semerkhet (Level 12), download the game save for Level 13.

» Error message when you install or start Tomb Raider 4:
C:\Windows\System32\Autoexec.nt The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications.

This issue may occur if one or more of the following files are missing or damaged.

CONFIG.NT
AUTOEXEC.BAT
COMMAND.COM

» File "binkw32.dll" Not Found.
If you get the above message reporting a missing file, install the TR4 patch which includes the binkw32.dll file.

For Windows 98/ME download this patch from Eidos Interactive which resolves the problem. The zip file contains binkw32.dll which should be copied to your \windows\system32 folder.

» I am stuck in the Jeep, and can't get out.
To exit the Jeep, make sure the vehicle is completely stopped on flat ground. Then hold down the Jump button and press the Left or Right arrow key to exit the Jeep. Sometimes the Right arrow doesn't work. If this happens reposition the vehicle if needed and use the Left arrow key.

» The screen seems to flicker after I exit the game.
The monitor refresh frequency may have been set back to 60Hz. Go to the Display Properties and reset the refresh rate back to normal (Control Panel > Display > Settings > Advanced > Monitor Tab).
