Tomb Raider 1: Atlantean Scion Walkthrough & Game Guide

Level 14: Atlantis

Wait for the lights to come on. Then proceed forwards and pick up the Uzi Clips. When you approach the opening, the sphere on the left explodes and a mutant jumps out. Quickly hop back and start shooting until it explodes. Exit and turn right. Proceed ahead and when the sphere explodes and the mutant jumps out, jump back and side-flip into the tunnel you came from, shooting at the same time.

Exit and proceed to the other side of room. The second sphere on the left will not explode, but the third will. So, when the mutant is released, jump back whilst shooting. The other two spheres on the right hand side will not explode, so hang around freely. At the end of the room you will find some Uzi Clips in front of a closed door. It does not open now, nor the door on the right. So, go to the left. The door here opens automatically. Go through it and up the steps to reach a dark area above the one where you killed the mutants.

Area with glassed floor - This area is indeed dark, but the Small Medi Pack (in the northwest corner) and the Shotgun Shells (on the middle walkway) are visible. To get the Shells, back-track to the entrance and go around the ledges. When you get to them (by facing west), proceed a bit ahead and the sphere below will explode, releasing a flying mutant. Jump back and shoot. Usually (not always) it takes some time until the mutant finds its way up. If you use a powerful weapon, you will kill it before it comes up. The sphere beneath the northwest door (close to where you got the Medi Pack) explodes after you have killed the flying mutant. Walk somewhere above it and the mutant that will now be released will come up the steps you came from, so turn to face the entrance and start shooting as soon as Lara aims at it. There is one remaining sphere, but it does not explode yet.

Now, scout the area a little bit and see what is what. If the entrance is to your back, you will be able to see a closed door opposite. There is another closed door in the other corner on the same side and an alcove in the back right corner. Go to the alcove and use the switch to open the opposite door (across from you). Go to this door and use the switch to open the other door. Before going there, walk somewhere above the remaing sphere to release a flying mutant. Again, it takes some time to find its way, but kill it quickly. Then go through the door you just opened.

Go down the steps and flip the switch to open the middle door in the room below. The door at the bottom of the steps opens automatically and it gets you back to the room with the exploded spheres.

Tall room with lava pool - Go through the door you just opened on the right, having your weapons drawn. When you enter the room with the lava pool, Lara will aim at a flying mutant above. Shoot it a couple of times and then hop back and into the tunnel you came from. The mutant may find its way inside, so hop more back, shooting at the same time until it explodes.

1st Secret - Return to the lava room and turn to face the way you came. Hop backwards and grab the edge of the square ledge. Release Action and press it again to grab the ledge below. Pull up and enter the tunnel. Pick up the Large Medi Pack and the Magnum and Uzi Clips. Continue through the tunnel and climb into the passage on the left. At the end, hang from the edge and drop down.

The way on the east side leads you back to the lava pool (it would be your entrance if you had not gone for the Secret). Since there is no reason to go there avoid this way, because it activates a jaw trap that you can avoid. Instead, enter the room on the west side.

Walk around the walkway and turn right when you reach the end. Take a standing jump with Action to grab the crevice in the wall. Release and grab the edge of the opening below. Pull up and go up the ramp. Use the switch to open the door outside and continue up the steps. Pick up the two sets of Uzi Clips from the doorway and take a standing jump to the walkway below. Now take a running jump to grab the opposite walkway. As you pass above the sphere, it explodes releasing a flying mutant. Pull up and enter the passage ahead from where you can safely kill the mutant. If you do not want all the kills, just ignore it. (The PS players will find a Save Crystal here.) Follow the passage around to the left to reach a room with a pool and a pyramid.

Area with pool and pyramid - Take a standing jump to grab the pillar ahead and pull up. Turn left to face the pyramid. The flat ledges are obvious. Position Lara to the middle of the edge (as shown in this screenshot) and take a running jump to the first flat ledge. Quickly take a standing jump to the next higher ledge on the right, because a boulder rolls from above. If you correctly positioned Lara from the beginning, you should be facing the second ledge once you drop onto the first one. Now turn right. There are three flat ledges beyond. Aim for the middle one (as shown here) and take a runing jump there. Avoid the bottom ledge because a boulder will roll.

2nd Secret - Before sliding down, turn to face southeast and take a standing jump to the higher flat ledge. Use standing jumps for each ledge, until you reach the top. Climb into the passage and go to the end. Pick the Large Medi Pack and the Magnum and Uzi Clips. Go back and slide down the pyramid to the ledge in front of the closed door.

Take a running jump to grab the bottom of the steps. Turn right and take a running jump to grab the pillar with the Large Medi Pack. Pull up, pick up the Medi Pack and take a running jump to grab the next pillar. Enter the cave on the left and pick up the two sets of Uzi Clips. Throw the switch to open three doors in the next room, which will allow lava to flow, the latter of which will move a walkway to the other side of the room, enabling you to access the exit.

The timed door - Jump into the water and locate the underwater lever beneath the pillar from where you got the Medi Pack. This opens the door at the bottom of the pyramid, but it is timed. You have about 40 seconds to make it there and you need to jump on the flat ledges of the pyramid. 40 seconds are enough in order to turn Lara on the ledges, so do not be nervous and do not give up if you think you have lost time. So, use the lever and swim towards the entrance. Climb on the ledge, then climb on the pillar and take a running jump to the first flat ledge. If you need to turn a bit to the right for the next ledge, do not hesitate. Turn and jump. Now set up your running jump to the middle of the three ledges beyond (as you did before). Once you land there, jump towards the wall to slide to the bottom. Then go through the door.

[Note - If the room is not filled with lava, it means that you did not use the switch in the cave above the pool. Also, there is a closed door that opens with the switch at the end of the walkway. We are not sure what is the point of this door, since the timed door remains open if the room is dry (which means that you can return through it) and you do not have access to the switch if the room is filled with lava in case you forgot something (let's say the Secret). Anyway...]

Take a running jump to grab the bottom part of the walkway ahead. Pull up and vault onto the right hand part. Turn left, take a running jump to the opening (the PS players will find a Save Crystal here) and follow the passage around to the left. Be careful of the spiked pit. Jump over it and climb up the two blocks. Drop into the water and swim down, then forwards. Get the Shotgun Shells from the bottom and pull the underwater lever to open the door. Swim through it and surface at the top of the next room.

Back to the tall room with lava pool - Climb out of the water and follow the passage to a ledge with two sets of Uzi Clips in the tall room with the lava pool, but this time a little bit higher. A jaw trap is activated in the opening you came from, so be careful. A flying mutant emerges now, so quickly turn right, take a running jump to grab the opposite ledge and pull up. Enter the passage on the right and kill the trouble from there. Pick up the two sets of Uzi Clips from the ledge.

Room with five switches and mutants - Follow the passage and drop into the water. Swim to a room with four underwater pillars that support the walkway above. When you enter, cut to the right and get the Small Medi Pack from behind the pillar. There is also an opening on the left hand side, which leads to three closed gates. The gates are also accessible from above. So, surface and climb out of the water. (The PS players will find a Save Crystal here.) If you want, pick up the two sets of Uzi Clips from the opening that leads to the three closed doors, in case you want to avoid a mutant in just a bit.

There are five switches around, and since the doors are three, you need to use only three switches. One of them will release a mutant that you can either kill or avoid. The two secure switches are in the northeast and southwest corners of the room. These open the the 3rd and 2nd doors. The third switch is the middle one on the north side. This will also release a mutant from the exact opposite sphere (if you approach it). If you are not interested in kills, jump into the water and swim through the three doors you opened. If you want the kills, you can use the two remaining switches and release three more mutants. (Yes, one of the switches releases two of them.)

Swim through the tunnel past the doors you opened and climb into the passage. Folow it around to the left, then go left again. On the T-junction, go to the right. Flip the switch to open the door. Enter and pick up the two sets of Uzi Clips. A boulder has already blocked the opening beyond, and since you need to go through that opening, do either:

Long way: Find the movable block close to the boulder. Pull it once, then go to the right side of it and push it towards the wall. That way, you will prevent the boulder from rolling in front of the passage. To reset the area, exit through the opening on the north side and follow the fleshy passage. Go left, use the switch again and enter. The boulder will roll, but the block will stop it.

Short way: Approach the opening with the boulder and stand diagonally and in front of the gap between the boulder and the wall (as shown in this screenshot). Start running towards it and press Jump. Do not let go of the Jump and Up arrows and Lara will pass through the gap.

Back to the tall with lava pool - The passage gets you to a ledge in the tall room with lava pool. Again, you find yourself a little bit higher. Draw weapons and kill the flying mutant. When it is dead, take a running jump to the ledge diagonally on the right.

Follow the passage to reach a room with two spheres. (The PS players will find a Save Crystal here.) As you approach the opening, the left hand one will explode revealing a flying mutant. Kill it from inside, then exit to the ledge to trigger the right hand mutant. Back up into the passage and kill it. Exit and walk up to the edge of the slide, positioning Lara in front of the fleshy part of the opposite slope (as shown here). The others are slippery. Slide down and jump just before the edge to clear the spiked pit. Pick up the two sets of Uzi Clips, the Shotgun Shells and the Large Medi Pack.

Room with sphere and sloped bridge - Follow the passage to reach a room with a sphere on the left and a sloped bridge in the middle. Go to the right and draw weapons. As you approach the Uzi Clips, a flying mutant will come from beyond, so kill it by back-tracking to the passage you came from if necessary. Pick up the Clips and return to the entrance. Jump to the ledge on the left, then to the pillar ahead. The sphere explodes and a flying mutant will attack. Enter the left hand passage and use it as a cover to kill the mutant. You will also find some Uzi Clips here.

From either opening, take a running jump to the bridge in the middle of the room, aiming for the brown part (the fleshy is slippery). Go to the left and turn left. Draw weapons and Lara will aim at the two mutants in the opening at the far right. You may have to side-flip to the left in order to avoid their shots, so make sure you position Lara parallel to the bridge. If one of the shots approaches you, side-flip to avoid it.

Once the mutants are history, turn around to face the opposite wall. Move a bit to the right, to the part that extends from the bridge. Take a running jump to grab the opposite ledge and pull up. Go to the right and pick up the two sets of Uzi Clips. Then throw the switch at the top of the ramp. This opens a door that you will pass through in just a bit. Retun back and take a running jump over the slide to land on the ledge with the movable block. Pull it to reveal the door you just opened. Go through it.

Follow the passage and go up the ramps. At the top, carefully pass the jaw trap: run when the blades are open. Turn right and take a running jump to the cave where the two mutants you killed were. Climb up the three blocks on the left and pick up the Small Medi Pack and Uzi Clips.

Back to the tall room with lava pool - Follow the passage to reach a ledge in the room with the lava pool (this time even more higher). A flying mutant emerges, so shoot it a couple of times, then hop back to the passage and finish it off. Once you are done, take a running jump to the right hand ledge.

Area with four pillars in lava pool - Go through the door that opens as you approach and closes once you pass through. You reach a room with four pillars in a lava pool. (The PS players will find a Save Crystal here.) Since you cannot reach any of the pillars, take a running jump to the ledge ahead. Enter the passage on the left and flip the switch to re-arrange the pillars and change their heights. Return back and take a running jump to the entrance.

Take a running jump to the closest pillar and use standing jumps for the next two. Then jump to the doorway, pressing Action to lower Lara's arc. If you land on the square ledge below, just climb into the opening. Here you will find a switch that re-arranges the pillars and brings them back to their initial position and height. Use it and return back to the doorway. Take a standing jump to the pillar on the left and a running jump to grab the pillar beaneth the opening. If you cannot do the latter, take a running jump to the pillar next to the wall, then a standing jump to grab the pillar beneath the opening. Pull up and jump to the opening.

Go around the passage to reach a fleshy ramp. Three mutants come down, so back-track and take a standing jump with Action to the last pillar you came from. These freaks are not designed to jump from doorways, so kill one or two from here. Then jump back to the opening in order to lure the remaining mutants, and jump to the pillar again. Once they are dead, jump into the opening.

3rd Secret - Follow the passage around to the left and notice the floor. There is a tile that does not have a gold border (as shown in this screenshot). On stepping there, you open a door at the top of the ramp in the next fleshy passage. It is on the right hand side, specifically. This door is on a slow timer, so do not panic. Inside, you will find a Large Medi Pack, some Uzi Clips and Shotgun Shells.

Back to the tall room with lava pool - Follow the passage at the top of the ramp. The door opens as you approach and closes when you pass through. Do NOT use the switch on the right hand wall. It does NOT open the door here and you will NEVER open it (ignore the pick-ups behind). This will make the lava beyond flow. Instead, climb into the opening next to the door you just passed through to reach the tall room with the lava pool (this time a lot more higher). Take a running jump to the ledge on the right and pick up the two sets of Uzi Clips. Proceed to the next room, where a mutant will attack. Staying in the passage does not help, because this thing throws fireballs. Stay in front of the passage and side-flip to avoid the shots. When it is dead, pick up the Uzi Clips.

The next trap includes darts and jaws. To easily pass them, approach either side of the ramp and go to the end, close to the jaw trap (as shown in this screenshot). Face the ramp and jump on it. Quickly hop back to avoid the boulder that rolls from above. The jaw trap has been deactivated and you can pass through and reach the next room.

Room with three thrones - You reach the throne room of the three Atlantean rulers: Natla, Qualopec and Tihocan - notice the letters. (The PS players will find a Save Crystal here.) The base of each throne is a movable block, but you can only push Natla's block. Push it twice to reveal a passage. Go to the right to reach the area behind Tihocan's throne. Here you will find two switches with trapdoors beneath and a closed door between the switches. It does not matter which switch you use, since both lead to the same place.

Once you use the right hand switch, back flip. Hang from the edge and drop down. Jump to the ramp ahead and back-flip to avoid the boulder. Then jump again to the ramp and go up and then to the left. If you use the left hand switch, back fip. Then turn around and hang from the edge. Drop down, having the Jump button compressed whilst in midair. Once you land on the slide, you will jump over the spiked pit and land to the ramp ahead. Go up it, then to the left.

Climb through the opening, then onto the block ahead. Throw the switch to open the door between the two switches above. Climb up the next blocks and drop down, behind the thrones. Go through the door you just opened and up the ramp.

When you pass through the door, it closes behind you. Pick up the four sets of Uzi Clips from two of the room's corners (and a Save Crystal for the PS players). As you approach the other side of the room, the sphere on the ground will explode, revealing a centaur. Quickly back-flip whilst shooting and side-jump to avoid his fireballs. Once he is dead, flip the switch to open the door and activate the two spheres at the top. If you do not want to deal with the two mutants, move around the perimeter of the room until you line Lara up with the exit (as shown in this screenshot). Then go through it and slide down the ramp. If you want to deal with them, follow the above procedure until you reach the door. Facing the door, side-flip to either side and both spheres will explode. Quickly side-flip in front of the entrance and slide down the ramp. You will deal with the mutants from below.

In this cave, two more mutants will attack. You have to deal with them, so better use a powerful weapon. If you are able, climb on the block on the right hand side. Note though that you will lose a lot of health, because the mutants will jump on Lara. If you triggered the mutants above, go to the bottom of the ramp you came from and kill them from here.

Lara's mirrored creature - Approach the middle of the room and examine the creature. It does exactly what Lara does and it can even shoot you if you shoot at it, which means that if it dies, you also die. To leave that room, you have to kill it. But instead of shooting it, you have to lure it into a trap.

Trapping the creature - Your side is the west one. Its side is the east one. Facing west, go up the short ramp on the left and climb on the block. Turn around and jump to the pillar. From there take a running jump to the ledge beyond, aiming to the left part of it. Here is a tradpoor that opens with the switch and contains a lava pit. The door beyond is the exit. Flip the switch to open the drapdoor. It is timed and you have 40 seconds to lure the creature here.

(The following sequence is shown in this screenshot.) So, use the switch, roll and run diagonally to the left. Jump at the edge and grab the block. This block is the one the creature first climbed onto (following your moves of course). If you land just in front of the block, do not hesitate!! Jump up to grab it and pull up. Turn right and jump to the pillar. Then take a running jump to the ledge. Run in the middle. If you run above the correct spot, the camera will pan back, showing the creature falling into the lava pit. On doing this, the exit door opens. So make your way up there, as you did before.

Bug note\ general notes - Two things can go wrong here. First, if you save and load in this room or whilst sliding down the ramp that leads here, the creature will either disappear or not move. In that case, jump towards the ramp you came from and slide back. This will re-set the area and everything should be normal now. Second, the creature may be confused and stuck somewhere during the process. A strange position is shown in this screenshot. The creature will not move no matter what, so the only thing you can do is to load a previous save. And if your latest save is inside the room, you may activate the bug as described above and you will have to re-set the area. Finally, this kill will not be added to your final statistics.

Go through the exit and climb into the passage above. Pick up the Uzi Clips and go to the top. When you turn left around the corner, a centaur attacks. Quickly jump back, shooting at the same time. Back up to the passage you came from, and drop through the opening if necessary. Once it is dead go to the top and pick up some more Uzi Clips. A mutant will emerge from the right. It does not require that many shots, so kill it, backing up a bit.

Timed run\ door and bridge - There are two switches: one on each side. The right hand switch opens the exit door and the left switch raises the bridge. Since the switch that opens the door gives you more time, it means that you have to use it first. Before doing anything, go to the left and pick up the Uzi Clips. Now go to the right (noticed the closed door here), flip the switch and roll. Start running, jumping at the same time to cover more distance. Jumping over the corners will also help you. Once you flip the left switch, run to the bridge and pass through the door.

You reach the room where Natla placed the Scion on the alter. Pick up the two sets of Uzi Clips and go up the short ramp on the left. Stand in front of the alter and press Action to trigger a cut scene.

(Note - If you go behind the Scion, you will see a platform and a sphere at the top. The platform is the top of the tall room with the lava pool. If you drop down there, you cannot go anywhere. This place is the beginning of the next level. To return back, approach the back right corner of the platform and a door will open. Jump through it and go up the steps. Another door will open. Climb through it to return back to the room with the timed door and bridge. You have to make the timed run once more.)

In the cut scene, Lara reaches for the Scion on the alter. Energy pushes her back and Lara receives another vision.

The FMV shows Natla, who is held captive by the other two Atlantean rulers, Qualopec and Tihocan. She screams "You can't do this!". The other two rulers have already made up their minds and codemn Natla for her crimes and flagrant misuse of her powers. Natla tries to defend herself, but Qualopec interrupts her, telling her that she tried to wage war on both of them (Qualopec and Tihocan), only to use the pyramid for her mindless destruction. Natla, being wrathful, says that nothing was mindless, and they could never use their powers properly. Qualopec does not want to hear more from her and says to Tihocan "Let's just do it!" Natla refers to Tihocan now, asking for his help, but Tihocan stands by Qualopec and tells her that she used the pyramid as a "freak factory", whilst the camera shows a creature beyond. Natla tries to explain, saying that they are a new generation. Tihocan, however, tells her that they are going to lock her in limbo. Qualopec orders a mutant to use a switch that will lock Natla in the limbo. As Natla is being sealed, she screams "You won't rest either, or your damned continent of Atlantis!"

Back in the present, the cut scene shows Lara being thrown back from the alter. Natla approaches now and says "Back again?". Lara comments with the same meaning, assuming that Natla is back again for a grand re-opening.

Natla: Evolutions is in a rut. Natural selection at an all time low. Shipping out fresh meat will incite territorial rages again, will strengthen us and advance us, even create new breeds.

She then shows Lara the sphere in the next room.

Lara: A kind of evolution on steroids then?

Natla: A kick in the pants. Those runts Qualopec and Tihocan had no idea. The cataclysm of Atlantis struck a race of langering wimps - plummeted them to the very basics of survival again. It shouldn't happen like that.

Lara: Or like this...

And Lara makes a move with her hand, showing the room.

A voice from a computer then reports: Hatching commences in fifteen seconds.

Natla: Too late for abortions now.

Lara whilst pointing her gun at the Scion says "Not without the heart of the operation."

Natla screams "Nooo!!" and attacks Lara in order to stop her. They both fall off the edge, but Lara manages to grab the platform below. Natla falls into the darkness below and Lara pulls onto the platform. The computer continues the countdown "Five... four... three... two... one..."
