Level 20: Cleopatra's Palaces

* We do not count the skeleton from the brief visit from the Pharos, Temple of Isis level.

** We do not count the pick-ups from the brief visit from the Pharos, Temple of Isis level. Also, Lara will have to pick up the Scarab three times. We do not count this kind of pick-ups in the statistics.

[Note - In order to continue with the game from here without going back to the Temple of Isis again, you need to have brought with you the Winding Key and the Mechanical Scarab. If you do not have them, make sure you get the Black Beetle from here and then return to the previous level (check the walkthrough of the Temple Of Isis level on how you can get the above items). The following walkthrough refers to the second (proper) visit to the level.]

Jump into the pool with the fountain and follow the thin underwater tunnel. Climb out of the water and use the niche to operate a mechanism that lowers a part of the floor in a room you have not been to yet. Return back through the underwater tunnel and climb out of the water. Go through either of the two doorways below the balcony on the north side, and if you have not already done so, shoot the three benches to get a Large Medipack, the Crossbow Normal ammo, and the Revolver ammo.

At the end of the hallway, stand on the tile with the beetle symbol. If you have not already done so, combine the Winding Key with the Mechanical Scarab to get the Mechanical Scarab With Key. Select it from your inventory and Lara will wind up the Mechanical Scarab. It will then pass over the holes and deactivate the spikes. Cross the hallway and pick up the Scarab again.

You can see two doorways in the next room with the plant. Go up the ramp on the left (north). When you enter the room with the sarcophagus, the blade trap at the entrance is activated. Get the Right Gauntlet from the sarcophagus and take care of the skeleton that appears on your right. To get past the blade trap, stand in front of it as close as you can and go through it when the blades open. Crawling through is also a technique that is rather effective.

Follow the doorway on the East Side to reach the T-junction. A skeleton appears from the right, so take care of it. Make a mental note of the closed double doors opposite the doorway, because eventually you will open those from the other side. There is a spiked trap on the right hand side of the T-junction (from where the skeleton came), and two more on the left after the pool. If you want to get the level's only Secret, you need to follow the right hand side of the intersection (south). This is because you can use the Mechanical Scarab three times only. You have already used it once, and if you use it to disable the double spiked trap on the left (north), you will not be able to get the Secret that is also protected by a spiked trap. Note though that both ways lead to the same place.

So, use the Scarab to deactivate the spikes on the right, cross the hallway, and pick up the Scarab again. Go through the opening on the right just before the stairs. The blade trap is activated when you enter the room with the sarcophagus. Get the Shotgun Wideshot and Normal ammo's and the Large Medipack from the sarcophagus and take care of the skeleton that appears from your right. Exit and go up the stairs.

Go down the next set of stairs to reach a room with two tall columns. First, get the Small Medipack from the sarcophagus. The entire area in front of the column near the three doorways triggers a gold bird. Kill it. Two of the three doorways are on the same side (north), and the third one is on the left (west). Go through the left one (west), taking a mental note of the closed door with the face on it to the right of the hallway. If you used the niche back in the first room of the level - after jumping into the pool with the fountain and going through the underwater tunnel - you should now see a pit in the left-hand corner of the room. Drop into it, climb into the alcove, shoot the bench, and pick up the Crossbow Explosive ammo. Take a standing jump back to the upper ledge.

When you approach the jump switch on the left, a skeleton appears on your right. Before killing it, see the bug note about the skeleton at the bottom of the page. Take care of it and jump up to pull the switch. This not only opens the nearby double doors that take you back to the T-junction (a direct access in case you have missed the Right Gauntlet), but also raises a block close to where the skeleton attacked you. Climb onto the block, face west, and take a standing jump to grab the crevice on the wall. Alternatively, face north and take a standing jump to grab the crevice of the extended wall. Shimmy to the right around all the corners until you can pull up.

Shoot the bench and pick up the Crossbow Normal ammo. Go through the opening on the left and up the ramp. When you enter the next room, the blade trap at the entrance is activated. Get the Right Greave from the sarcophagus on the left and take care of the skeleton that appears on your right. Exit but do not drop down to the hallway on the left. There are two spiked traps and you will need to climb up the ledge again. Instead, go back to the jump switch the same way that you came and drop down.

Pass the raised block and the pit, and go to the left the same way that you came before. The door with the face on it should be open. If it is not open it means that you missed either the Right Greave or the Right Gauntlet. Check the walkthrough above to see how you can get them. If you did not activate the skeleton bug before you should see two benches in the room with the sarcophagus. Shoot them and pick up the Large Medipack and the Crossbow Explosive ammo. Get the Pharos Knot from the sarcophagus and exit the room. (It is the Pharos Pillar, the same you picked up in the Lost Libray. There is a typo here in the game scripts.)

Go to the left to reach the room with the two tall columns. Go through the northeast doorway and cross the hallway. The spiked trap on the left leads back to the T-junction, and the spiked trap ahead to the Secret.

Secret (1-1\ total: 54-70) - Use the scarab to deactivate the spiked trap ahead (north), cross the hallway, and pickup the Scarab again. Open the sarcophagus and get the Crossbow Explosive ammo, the Small Medipack, the Shotgun Wideshot ammo, and the three Shotgun Normal ammo's.

Exit and go up the steps in the northeast corner. Pickup the Shotgun Normal ammo and place the Pharos Knot in the receptacle to open the nearby door.

Lara's "double" room - Enter the room and pick up the Small Medipack from the block in the middle.

A cut scene shows a light swirling all around you (the real Lara), and also around a duplicate of Lara on the opposite block (cool!).

A block also rises in the far left-hand corner of the room. If you want, you can examine Lara's duplicate. If you draw your weapons in front of her, you will see that the real Lara aims at the duplicate. Do not shoot at her or you will lose health. Keep this in mind at all times.

Climb onto the block and jump up to grab the bars. (If you cannot grab the bars, check the bug note about the bars at the bottom of the page). Traverse across to the other side. At the end of the alcove, grab the upper ledge and pull up. When you exit onto the walkway, a gold bird appears above. Kill it before it damages the dublicate, and therefore you. Walk to the edge of the extended walkway and take a running jump to the opposite one.

Climb into the alcove on the right and go up the ramp quickly. Ignore the sleeping skeleton and the bench that does not include anything, and take care of the gold bird that appears. It will fly to the bottom and start shooting at the duplicate if you let it live for too long, and this causes damage to YOU. If you are quick, you can kill it from above. You can jump onto the central platform, but be aware that if you do this then the sleeping skeleton will awaken. Otherwise, the golden bird will fly to the bottom and you will need to go down as well. Just be careful not to shoot the duplicate of you will lose health. If you have not done so already, take care of the skeleton from the lower part of the ramp where it will not follow you and jump to the central platform.

The door on the south side is the exit door. The other two doors open when you pull down the two jump switches, one on each side. You can pull them in any order, but be aware that using the one on the East Side causes a gold bird to appear. To use them both, walk to the edge and take a standing jump, pressing Action to grab each switch. Lara loses a small percentage of health when she drops onto the walkway below, so make sure you have a decent amount in your bar before you make the leap. When you throw the switch that is on the East wall, the gold bird appears on your right. Quickly kill it or it will start shooting at the duplicate way down below.

Once you have used both of the switches, make your way up to the central platform. The two doors have revealed two niches. Take a running jump to the ledge in the west and shoot the bench on the right hand side to get the Large Medipack. The sleeping skeleton awakens when you enter the alcove. So, you had better take care of it from the entrance and get the Ornate Handle from the niche. Jump back to the central platform and then to the ledge in the east. Get the Hathor Effigy from the niche, jump back to the central platform and then to the ledge in the south. Combine the Ornate Handle and the Hathor Effigy to get the Portal Guardian, and place it on the stick to open the exit door. Take care of the skeleton that appears when you go through the door, follow the hallway, and shoot the bench to get the Uzi ammo. Save your game and go down the stairs.

The cut scene shows Lara walking to the other side of the room before plonking herself down on a throne. Ok, she looks pretty as a Queen, but this seems to upset the two Guardians that emerge from the two nearby doors. (Oops!)

Dealing with the two Guardians - The deal here is to get the last two pieces of the Armor of Horus. Each one is located in a sarcophagus in the rooms behind the two Guardians. After getting the two pieces, two trapdoors in front of the throne open and you can leave. If you are not interested in the kills, you can ignore both of the Guardians, get the Left Greave and Breast Plate, and leave, taking a Medipack if necessary. If you want all the kills, there is no reason to spend some of your better ammo. Just equip the Pistols with unlimited ammo, crouch in front of each Guardian, and shoot. Just make sure you crouch almost right up against them. If you crouch too far away from them, their bolts will hit you.

Once you are done, drop through either of the two trapdoors and go down the stairs to end the level.

Bug note about the skeleton - If you are interested in all pickups, you must be very careful when you kill this particular skeleton. If you decide to blow it up, make sure you do it well away from the barred window from where it first appeared (opposite the block you raise after pulling the jump switch). To be safe, it might be a good idea to kill it in a different room. Later on you open the door with the face on it in order to get the Pharos Knot from the sarcophagus. There are also two benches in that same room that include a Large Medipack and Crossbow Explosive ammo. If you blew up the skeleton close to the barred window, you would have blown up the two benches as well, erasing the two pickups!! The two benches and the barred window are positioned extremely close together, separated only by a wall.

Bug note about the bars - Some people have mentioned that they cannot grab the bars. If you have the Mechanical Scarab in your inventory, use it for the fourth time in order to destroy it. If you do not have it, load a previous save game where you have it and make sure you use it three times in order to have it in your inventory. We assure you that the Mechanical Scarab has nothing to do with the bars, but this seems to work.
