Tomb Raider 8: Underworld Walkthrough & Game Guide

Level 4 | Croft Manor: Protected By The Dead

Health Supplies: 4
Treasures: 13/13
Relics: 1/1

(Note - Just before the level loads, you have the option of choosing between Casual, Jungle Shorts or Jungle Pants outfit. You can also select your secondary weapon to start with, although you can change it any time from your PDA.)

The cut scene shows Lara back at the Manor. She finds Zip, Alister and Winston in the tech room. The latter opens a secret wall panel that leads to a crypt. Lara grabs two flashlights and she throws the one to Zip. They all go down the stairs and when they reach the basement, Lara approaches her grandfather's tomb. As she examines the grave, she finds a switch. She uses it and the tomb slides to the side revealing an opening in the floor.

Underground tunnel - The level begins in a tunnel. Turn right and break the vase to find a Treasure (1/13). Continue through the tunnel and vault on the next three ledges. There is another vase here that you can break and collect a Treasure (2/13). Jump to grab the thick vertical pole and climb to the top until you step on top of it. Jump to the wooden ledge and vault on the next two ledges. Continue through the tunnel to reach the next room.

Room with scaffoldings and angel statue\ Left upper ledge - Drop to the wooden ledge below, then to the next one just ahead. Kill the flock of bats and turn left. (The retrieval of the first two Treasures is shown in this page.) Jump to the wooden beam and move to the right around the corner. If you hang from the beam, you will traverse much quicker. Jump to grab the ledge, pull up and pick up the Treasure (3/13). Kill the spiders that attack and proceed to the other side of the ledge.

Position Lara to the right side of the ledge because this spot is closer to the horizontal pole. If you jump from the left side, Lara will not reach the pole and you will fall down. You can then climb up the scaffolding and try again. Jump to grab the pole and traverse to the left (close to the wall). Swing and jump to the opposite side. Go around the corner to the left and pick up the Treasure (4/13). To reach the ground, swing back to the ledge where you got the previous Treasure and use the scaffolding to get down.

Ground floor - When you reach the floor, a swarm of spiders attack from many directions. To make sure you have killed them all, go up either stairs to reach the platform behind the statue. At this point, you will also see a pressure plate. If you step on it, you will see that the recess will ignite and the big room behind the bars will be illuminated. If you step off, the fire will go off the big room will darken. So, you need something to put on the plate.

For now, go down the stairs and approach the left scaffolding. There is a vase there (as shown in this screenshot) that you can break and get a Treasure (5/13). You now have to climb up the scaffolding. Climb on the lower wooden ledge and use the beams to get the ledge above. Pick up the Health Pack and approach the other side of the ledge. Jump to grab the first horizontal pole and climb on it. Jump to grab the next higher pole, swing and jump to grab the third one. Swing and jump to the ledge beyond.

Right hand balcony - When you step on the balcony, draw weapons and kill the spiders coming from the right hand wall. Notice the horizontal pole on the wall (as shown in this screenshot). Jump to grab it and climb on it. Jump to grab the handhold above and traverse to the either left or right. Pull into the alcove and pick up the Treasure (6/13). Then drop back to the pole. Hang from it, turn to face the wall and press the Interact button to remove the pole. (You need this pole only for getting a Treasure, so if you are not interested, leave it there.)

Proceed to the other side of the balcony and through the doorway. Go down the stairs and put the pole down. Break the vase and pick up the Treasure (7/13). Pick up the pole again and go down the second flight of stairs. If you use dual weapons like the Pistols, Lara can hold the pole with the one hand while shooting with the other. So, kill the spiders that fall from the ceiling and enter the hallway at the bottom of the stairs.

Hallway beneath the right hand balcony - This hallway is beneath the balcony you passed before. Turn left, put the pole down and pick up the Health Pack. Draw weapons and kill some more spiders. If you want, you can leave the pole here for now, just make sure to remember the spot.

Getting the Relic - Just around the corner, you will be able to see a small block. Behind the bars to the right of the block is the level's Relic. Here is how you can get it: Pick up the block and go to the other side of the hallway where you will find a pressure plate. Step on the plate and press the Crouch button to set the block down. If you saty on the plate, you will see that the nearby gate opens. If you step off, the gate will close. This means that the block's weight is not enough to keep the gate open. So, you need one more block.

Cross back the hallway and turn around the corner. Pass the stairs you came on the right and enter the big room with the stained-glass windows. As soon as you enter, turn left and you will spot the second small block (as shown in this screenshot). Pick it up, enter the hallway and return back to the pressure plate. Step on the plate and press the Crouch button to set the block down. Now that both blocks are on the plate, the gate will remain open.

Cross back the hallway. Except for the gate, the bars to the Relic are also open. Crouch into the alcove and get the Relic.

Return back to the pressure plate and step on it. Grab one of the blocks and turn to face the open gate. Press the Grenade button to throw the block through the doorway and into the room beyond. Do the same with the second block. Then run and roll through the doorway before the gate closes.

Back to the room with scaffoldings and angel statue - You are back to the room with the scaffoldings and angel statue. Now that you have both blocks here, position them on the pressure plate behind the statue. The blocks' weight will keep the plate down. When you do that, the recess will ignite and the big room with the stained-glass windows behind the bars will be illuminated. This action also opens that two side gates.

Return back to the hallway you came from (to the right if you are facing the bars). Get the pole you left earlier and proceed to the room with the stained-glass windows (where you found the second small block). Do not do anything here yet. Instead, go through the opening at the other side.

(Note - The following two paragraphs describe the retrieval of the next Treasure. If you are not interested, skip them and follow the part of the walkthrough Room with stained-glass windows\ Solving the puzzle. If you go for the Treasure, you will find two more small blocks. There is another gate in the hallway like the previous one, but you do not have to bother with the process opening the gate.)

Hallway beneath the left hand balcony - You just entered a hallway which is beneath the left hand balcony (same as the other one). You will see a third small block just beyond, but ignore it. If you turn around the corner, you will have to deal with a swarm of spiders. Go up the stairs on the right then the next ones.

Left hand balcony - Here you will see a fourth small block. Ignore that too. Kill the flock of bats flying from the left. Locate the hole in the right wall (as shown in this screenshot). Stand against the wall and beneath the hole and press the Interact button to put the pole in the hole. Climb on the pole, jump to grab the handhold above and traverse to the either left or right. Pull into the alcove and pick up the Treasure (8/13). Make your way back to the room with the stained-glass windows.

Room with stained-glass windows\ Solving the puzzle - Now that the recess is lit, you can solve this room's puzzle. Take a look at the stained-glass windows. Each one represents an angel. Half of the window is illuminated while the other half is dark. The goal here is to illuminate only the angel figure and leave the rest of the window dark. (This page shows the comparison.)

Approach the central stone structure with the four switches having the windows behind you. Use the first switch on the right twice. Every time you do that, the corresponding metal panel at the top of the structure rotates and the shadow of the panel falls on the window. On the second time, the angel will be perfectly surrounded by shadow. When you do it correctly, one of the two locks will be removed from the exit door.

Go around the structure and use the exact opposite switch three times (the second on the left if the windows are to the back of you). The corresponding metal panel above will rotate and its shadow will perfectly surround the angel figure. When you do it correctly, the second lock will be removed from the door.

Timed door - Go to the front side of the room and grab the one of the two handles of the mechanism. Rotate it 180 degrees anticlosckwise to fully open the exit door. Once you release the handle, the door starts to close. It is on a slow timer, so don't rush and make wrong moves. If you do not hesitate during the process, you will make it without problems.

(The following sequence is shown in this page.) Go behind the stone structure and jump to grab the handhold on the pillar (there are handholds to both sides, so it does not matter which way you go). Climb to the top of the pillar until you reach the handhold that goes around it. Traverse around the corner to reach the side of the pillar outside the bars. For example, if you climbed up the left side of the pillar, traverse around the left corner. Jump to grab the top ledge of the pillar and pull up. Go to the other side and use the Grapple to catch the metal ring above. Swing across and press Jump to leap off and land in the hallway behind the door.

Behind the timed door - Go up the stairs and kill the swarm of spiders that attacks. Follow the hallway to the right and then left around the corner, killing more spiders on your way. Pick up the Health Pack and break the vase to get a Treasure (9/13). Before going up the stairs, turn left around the corner to find one more Treasure (10/13) lying on the floor.

Return back and go up the stairs to the next room.

In the cut scene, Lara approaches a table in the middle of the room. She finds the other gauntlet and a tape recorder. She presses the Play button and she hears her father's voice. He tells her that this room contains everything the recovered from Bhogavati. Among other things, he and his team brought some "thralls" that were protecting the gauntlet. Lara discovers at the same time that the cages are broken. The thralls were also protecting a map showing where the rest of Thor's treasures were hidden. All these are necessary to open the way to Avalon. The gauntlet is here, however Lara's father destroyed the original map and left a copy. As before, the gauntlet turns into dust when Lara touches it and a small artifact casting blue light remains. Lara takes it and places it on her right hand.

Room where you got the gauntlet - After the cut scene, two thralls climb down from a ledge. Quickly draw a powerful weapons and start shooting. Use dual weapons like the Submachine guns, because that way you will be able to maneuver Lara better. Be careful of the deep pit as you jump around. This is a long drop down that wall kill Lara. If you need it, there is a Health Pack next to the cage.

When the thralls fall down, stand close to them and press the Interact button. Lara will jump on their body and smash their bones. If you do not do that, the thralls will revive and you will have to start over.

(The retrieval of the Treasure is shown in this page. If you are not interested, skip to the next paragraph.) Once you are done, approach the pillar with the flat ledge at the top. The gauntlet "tells" you that the pillar is movable, so push it between the two columns that are close to the entrance. Climb on the narrow ledge of either side column and jump to grab the flat ledge of the movable pillar. Pull up and turn to face the ledge above the entrance. Jump to grab it and pull up. Pick up the Treasure (11/13) and safely make your way back to the ground.

(Note - There is a horizontal pole lying on the floor close to the cage. You will not use it anywhere, so do not waste your time.)

Exiting the room - (The retrieval of the next Treasure and the way to the exit are shown in this page.) Push the pillar close to the broken column that is close to the cage. Climb on the column's narrow ledge and jump to grab the flat ledge of the movable pillar. Pull up and jump to grab the top of the broken column. Pull up and turn left. Jump on the beam of the next pillar and hang from it. Traverse to the right and around the pillar. Before reaching the next beam, look back and jump to grab the ledge behind you. Pull up and collect the Treasure (12/13). Jump back to grab the crevice in the column and traverse to the right. Pull up on the second beam and jump to grab the handhold of the column that is hanging from the ceiling. Traverse to the right and jump back to land on the ledge in front of the exit.

The cut scene shows Lara going through the opening. The gauntlet drains like it did the previous time.

Tunnel with wooden support beams - Follow the tunnel as it goes around to the left, then right. When you turn left for the second time, look for a vase on the right. Break it and pick up the Treasure (13/13). Go to the end to enter the small room. Throw the switch to open the nearby stone door and go through it.

In the cut scene, an explosion occurs and Lara seems surprised.

Does this look familiar? This is how the game began. If you wondered what had happened the day when the Manor exploded, it is time to find out. The next part is identical to the Prologue, so refer to that walkthrough if you have problems. Once you swing across to the second balcony and drop to the main hall, the story unfolds in details.

The cutscene shows Winston and Zip trying to get out from the main door. The latter points his gun towards Lara and shoots her. Lara evades and Winston tries to stop him, but Zip is determined that Lara must die. She screams "Wait!" and hides behind a column. When Zip needs to reload, Lara bursts in and tells him to drop his gun. Zip tells Lara that she - or someone who looked like her - got into the vault using the retina scanner and stole Amanda's Wraith Stone (Lara got it from Amanda in Tomb Raider: Legend). Lara asks where Alister is but neither of the men knows. Lara tells Zip and Winston to get out of the house before the roof collapses and decides to go have a look at the security logs.

After the cut scene, approach the fireplace and jump to grab the narrow ledge on the right (as shown in this screenshot). Pull up and jump straight up to grab the ledge at the bottom of the three small colums. Again, jump up to grab the ledge above the columns, then up again to grab the top handhold. Traverse to the right around the corner and release to either land on the balcony or grab its edge and pull up.

Go to the right of the balcony and jump to grab the horizontal pole. Climb on it and turn left. Jump to grab the top of the security glass, pull up and hang from the other side. Release to drop to the ground.

When Lara enters the tech room, in the next cut scene, something catches her eyes behind the glass wall. It is a strange shadow, so she moves close to the glass wall. Lara makes some moves, trying to understand if the shadow will imitate her in every way. What she thought to be her own reflection appears to be a copy of herself, paler with red hair.

Alister suddenly comes out from nowhere, coughing with the smoke. Without showing mercy, Lara's double shoots him twice. Lara screams and opens the secure door but when she turns around, she is face to face with the double, who is smiling evilly. The creature beats Lara, preventing her from helping Alister. When the copy runs away, it is too late, and Alister dies in Lara's arms.

Carrying her friend, Lara joins Zip and Winston in the park and lays Alister's body on the ground. Zip wants to know what this thing was and Lara tells him that she has seen something like that once before; a doppelganger that Natla sent after her many years ago. (If you have played the origianal Tomb Raider or the remake of it, Anniversary, you should remember the flesh creature that imitated Lara.)

Winston wonders if this is possible, since Natla is now Amanda's prisoner. What seems logical to Lara is that the two works together. Lara decides to go to southern Mexico and retrieve Thor's belt. When Zip disagrees, arguing that she should stop her business because of Alister's death, Lara makes clear to him that in order to kill a god (Natla) she needs Thor's hammer. To get the hammer, she first needs to get the belt.
